The weather would prove to be perfect for a night with KING DIAMOND, November 4th, 2024 @ The Fillmore - Minneapolis, MN: Dark, gloomy, almost melancholic... Perfect!
KING DIAMOND's 'Saint Lucifers Hospital 1920' tour is based on the highly anticipated new album The Institute. Slated for release mid - 2025, this will be King's first studio album in eighteen years. Although the setlist includes only two new tracks from the upcoming album, ("Spider Lilly" & "Electro Therapy") the new songs seemingly had an instant impact on those in attendance.
King, and the band proved to mean business; to no one's surprise, they were simply stellar. As the night unfolded, KING DIAMOND effortlessly navigated, commanded & soared through the setlist. Andy LaRocque & Mike Wead, carved the night's atmosphere with their trademark twin guitar attack. When asked of the best dual guitar teams in Heavy Metal, most immediately cite MAIDEN & PRIEST respectfully. Anyone who has witnessed Wead & LaRocque laying it down know they certainly belong in this class as well. Pinpoint precise riffs? Razor sharp rhythm? Expressive soaring solos? All provided in abundance by the incredible duo. The anchor is the rhythmic foundation of Bassist Pontus Egberg & Drummer Matt Thompson, which provides the harmonic support & thunderous pulse, building the backbone of the entire experience.
The setlist, as always, was built for fans including no surprises. Favorites "Halloween" & "Abigail" proved to be standouts according to the crowd's reception. On the flipside, an unexpected but pleasant surprise was the inclusion of keyboardist/backing vocalist for the tour - 'MYRKVR' (Amalie Bruun) followed King to every vocal height & eerie nuance, while visually painting euphoric tapestries. Another highlight of the evening, was the impeccable acting/performance by Jodi Cachia (Artist/Designer/Performer), who contributed to KING DIAMOND's theatrical spectacle, in a BIG way. Jodi, embodied 'Grandma', 'Miriam' & 'Lula' as only she can, in a manner almost indistinguishable from being truly paranormal. It's quite the task to encompass these two artists in words. Let's just say MYRKVR (Amalie Bruun) & Jodi Cachia, added an undeniable magic to an already magical evening.
Theatrical prowess & masterful storytelling has always been a cornerstone of any KING DIAMOND performance. This tour is no different. I'm not going to go into flowing detail about either aspect, it's something you must experience for yourself. So, get your ass up off the couch and go... Time waits for no man nor beast... our favorite artists will not be around/active forever.
