IMPELLITTERI
War Machine

2024 Frontiers Records

IMPELLITTERI is the band formed in 1986 by the master of shred guitar, Chris Impellitteri. War Machine is the band's 12th full-length album, and the fourth since the return of lead vocalist Rob Rock for 2009's Wicked Maiden. The lineup of course includes longtime bassist James Pulli. Replacing Jon Dette on drums is none other than Paul Bostaph (FORBIDDEN, SLAYER, TESTAMENT). So once again, the band has recruited another monster thrash-style drummer to give their songs a kick in the ass and tons of double bass.

This isn't brain surgery. IMPELLITTERI has always about shredding your face off with lightning-fast guitar riffs from Chris Impellitteri's hands, and soaring melodic vocals from Rob Rock, and this album is no exception to that. These 11 songs are perfect examples of "technical prowess and raw energy". No, they aren't reinventing the wheel here, or giving you a philosophical topic to toss around with your buddies over your next chess match. These are observations on A.I. taking over, heavy metal standing proud, and the occasional cautionary tale of the all-too-real evil in the world. Don't stress out my friend, just sit back and let these heavy metal veterans show you how it's done. This is real heavy metal played with heart and gusto. Eat their dust!

I like every song, but I will point out a few of my favorites. For example, "Power Grab" (video on KNAC.COM HERE) simply kills, with its message of society's ills and references to the military-industrial complex. The backing vocals are a nice touch and raise the song up a notch. "Beware The Hunter" lets Rob show off his melodic skills and puts the hammer down musically. "What Lies Beneath" is a melodic feast of chunky riffs, blazing leads and harmony vocals. "Hell On Earth" might be my favorite track, however. That song is on another level.

Clearly the band is having fun, based on the promotional videos they have released so far. The entirety of War Machine is a blast and I had this album cranked up loud enough to wake the dead. Even Stan W. Decker's insane cover art is over the top. I can't wait to hold this masterpiece in my hands upon release on November 8th. IMPELLITTERI's War Machine will rank among the top albums of the year for me. Buy or die.
