The Heaviest, Darkest Metal To

The heaviest, darkest metal tour of 2006 - the Unholy Alliance Tour: Preaching to the Perverted – has finally made it on to DVD. The DVD contains performances by headliners Slayer, Lamb of God, Mastodon, Children of Bodom and Thine Eyes Bleed and has a running time of 90-minutes. The performances were recorded at Vancouver's General Motors Place on July 13, 2006.

Each segment starts off with a small interview/useless banter (like Dave Lombardo whining about not being able to “call in sick sometimes”) with the band that is next in the lineup (Mastodon is only slightly more amusing than anyone else). Thine Eyes Bleed starts the DVD live section but show a lackluster performance with Dark White before the pace is kicked up a notch with Children of Bodom. Slamming in with Angels Don’t Kill and carrying the momentum with In Your Face, the precision that Children of Bodom displays in their brand of Finnish metal shows why they are quickly becoming American favorites. Sheer energy projects from the stage to the crowd and back again.

The high point of this DVD is it showcases the underrated talent of Mastodon. The band tears up the stage with Blood and Thunder, Crystal Skull and Capillarian Crest, which keeps the sweaty, exhausted crowd circling throughout the entire set.

More shocking than the fact Sharon Osbourne or Gene Simmons isn’t making a buck off this DVD is that Lamb of God is only featured in one clip, Vigil. The DVD easily could have included more performances from Lamb of God if it didn’t include the “Extras” – the wickedly retarded parking lot footage for example (do we really need to see every fan in the parking lot yell “fucking Slayer!” one by one?). The fact they only get one song is kind of like reliving Metallica and Jethro Tull at the Grammys all over again.

Slayer, as usual, puts on one powerful performance, and the DVD shows clips of the usual staples – South of Heaven, Silent Scream, Angel of Death, Hell Awaits, etc. As this was in part the tour for Christ Illusion the abbreviated set list did include Cult and Eyes of the Insane. While the band was in top notch, there are scenes in which the band gets washed out by the lights on the stage (when they turn all blue). Better production was needed.

Overall great DVD providing glimpses of performances by great bands.
