Blood Ties is the latest solo album by BLACK STAR RIDERS, THIN LIZZY and THE ALMIGHTY frontman Ricky Warwick. It follows his impressive 2021 album When Life Was Hard & Fast.

"Angels of Desolation" appears to continue where Warwick's last album left off. This opener is a mid-tempo rocker that has hints of that BLACK STAR RIDERS (and THIN LIZZY) sound, but is still distinctively a Ricky Warwick affair. BLACKBERRY SMOKE frontman Charlie Starr trades vocals and licks with Warwick on "Rise And Grind" Starr adds his trademark southern flair to the track.

I didn't have a duet between Ricky Warwick and Lita Ford on my bingo card for 2025, but here we are with "Don't Leave Me in the Dark". Ford's soft yet edgy vocals match Warwick's gritty tones almost to a tee. The song isn't too Hard Rock. It's more of a slightly pumped up ballad.

Despite its strange title, "The Crickets Stayed In Clovis" makes a good point of looking at things in a different perspective. Sometimes those close to you can help you look at the bright side. You can't deny the similarities to THIN LIZZY music wise. CULT guitarist Billy Duffy makes an appearance on "Don't Sell Your Soul To Fall In Love", a tome about not giving up who you are to please someone else.

"Dead And Gone" rocks hard with fervent guitar riffs and driving drum beats, before giving way to a soulful verse and chorus section. Billy Duffy returns for a much harder track, "The Hell Of Me And You". Duffy instills some of that CULT Punk Rock swagger to the song.

The guitar riff isn't too flashy or complicated on "Crocodile Tears", but you'll certainly be humming it before long. That, and the simple yet catchy chorus section. The final song on the album, "The Town That Didn't Stare" rocks harder than the album's opening track.

As I mentioned earlier, Warwick's last solo album When Life Was Hard & Fast was just fantastic. It truly set a high bar for its eventual follow up. With that said, I didn't dislike Blood Ties, but I did feel I was getting more of the same, yet a bit more restrained.

The duet with Lita Ford was a nice twist, but not enough to raise the album above its predecessor. Lyrically Blood Ties is a more personal affair, and you have to respect Warwick for that.
