I don’t buy the backstory of CLASSLESS ACT. Five strangers from all around the globe meeting through TikTok and other social media. They end up with a record deal on a prominent label. Three top Rock producers get on board for their debut album Welcome To The Show.
On top of all of that, CLASSLESS ACT scores an opening spot on one of the biggest tours of 2022 with DEF LEPPARD, MOTLEY CRUE, POISON, and JOAN JETT. They should buy a Mega Millions ticket while they are on such a hot streak.
It’s not about the story in the end, it’s about the music. Is Welcome To The Show by CLASSLESS ACT as extraordinary and astonishing as the band’s journey to get there? Let’s take a listen.
The opening song is named after the band. It’s a very Hard Rock/Metal thing to do, much like MOTÖRHEAD, IRON MAIDEN, and BAD COMPANY before them. It makes sense because this is the sound CLASSLESS ACT is channeling. The track sets the tone with its energy and features MOTLEY CRUE vocalist Vince Neil as special guest.
The group keeps the guest appearances going with Justin Hawkins (THE DARKNESS) on “The Is For You”. Hawkins and CLASSLESS ACT frontman Derek Day play well off of each other. Guitarists Dane Pieper and Griffin Tucker really tear it up during the breaks. Their twin guitar attack continues with some great licks on “Time to Bleed”.
“All That We Are” sounds straight out of L.A. circa 1989, right down to the raspiness of Day’s vocals. “Storm Before The Calm” has a slow build that peaks with a catchy and melodic chorus. “Walking Contradiction” is peppered with a smooth Jazz groove.
Day’s cocksure delivery on “Give It To Me” drives this song about lust. If you’re going to do an album in this vein, then you have to have a strong power ballad. “Circles” fits the bill with its acoustic guitars and heartfelt lyrics.
Welcome To The Show is an impressive debut effort. CLASSLESS ACT delivers the bombastic glitz of Las Vegas mixed with some classic Sunset Strip sleaze.
