The Danger Danger double CD Cockroach is one of the most intriguing albums to come across my desk in ages.
Disc one and disc two are identical. The track listing is the same (except in a different sequence), the guys handling the instruments are the same, the songwriters are the same, etc. So, why put out the same music on two separate CDs and in one package? Well, the answer is that disc two features the band’s recording of the album with original lead singer Ted Poley, and disc one features his replacement, Paul Laine.
Simply put, the band recorded the album in ‘93 with Poley. He quit. Sony and the band decided to re-record the vocal parts with Laine. Poley sued and the album sat in limbo for eight years. The band won the suit and decided to release the album(s) with both singers.
Disc one is great, but Laine’s vocals sound somewhat generic, the sequencing drags the album down and the one extra track, “Time In A Bottle,” could have been left off.
Disc two is a different story. Poley makes the band sound like Def Leppard meets Van Halen (F.U.C.K era) and the sequencing makes more sense. Top-notch hard rock making this, by far, the best album(s) the band has ever released.
Disc One: ***1/2
Disc Two: ****
