Upon its release two decades ago, Tron was a state-of-the-art special effects extravaganza and the first major CGI film. It also foreshadowed the way that computers would become integrated into our lives.
In the film, Jeff Bridges plays video game programmer Kevin Flynn, who is trying to prove that his former company stole his ideas. In attempting to bring down its autocratic Master Control Program (MCP), he is sucked inside the company's mainframe and into a digital world where computer programs are personified as individuals enslaved by this virtual dictator, which pits them against one another in gladiatorial video game competitions. Once trapped in cyberspace, Flynn assists renegade program Tron in his quest to bring down the MCP, which wants to extend its insidious influence into other corporations worldwide.
While Tron's plotline is standard sci-fi fare, and its technological slant dated (remember, this came out in the days of DOS and Atari), it's striking visual style and good performances, not to mention it’s imaginative examination of the life teeming within our computers, make it fun to watch today. Fans of the film will also be pleased by the bonus materials, including a 75-minute documentary, deleted scenes and soundtrack music, promotional materials, and more.
