New Debut from Crash Music Rec

Triplever’s debut release on Crash Music/Crash Merchant Records, Beyond the Grave, is a sonic annihilation on your senses. Immediately you are beat about the head and ears with the dual riffing of guitarists Mike Alexander and Kyle Stevenson. John and James Ledlow (bass and drums respectively) came hammering in to solidify the Triplever sound. And before you know it, vocalist Ray Coon is in your face.

This is an excellent entry in to the metalcore genre, especially at a time I was growing very tired of all the copycat bands that think the key to success is having a vocalist you can’t understand. Ray fits right in the genre as if he was a seasoned vet. While at times he does sound like he could get lost in the shuffle of anonymous vocalists in this genre, his voice lies somewhere in between Randy Blythe and Phil Anselmo. He pulls it off. Some of his potency can be found in Nameless and Better Way to Die where you can experience the different aspects of his voice. You literally ask yourself “Is this the same guy??!!”.

Laden through the entire disc is ferocious riffs from Mike and Kyle who are beginning to carve their own chapter of metal’s book on dual guitarists. Nothing comes across as stale or “been there, heard that”, they truly have their own unique style that meshes well together. Merchants of Chaos, Wasted and the licks behind the main riff during Without Warning are perfect examples of why your chiropractor will love you after getting this CD. And needless to say, John keeps it thick and heavy, waving his bass lines effortlessly for the entire duration.

James keeps the pace with some very energetic drum styles, however, at times the sound of the snare doesn’t seem to come together sound-wise. Trust me, it’s not the St. Anger syndrome by any stretch of the definition. At times it just seems too hollow. Bloodshed would be a good example of this. Thankfully, its not prominent for most of the disc, most of the time it’s a hammer to your head the way you like it.

The boys give a big ‘fuck you’ to Nathan Gale in the near anthem Punk with a Gun:

What the fuck
When I woke one day
You killed a legend
And went away
What the fuck
Were you thinking?
What went wrong
in your head?
You’ve got no morals
And now you’re dead
Punk, now you’re just a
Punk, with a gun

Picking up this disc for the first time you would think its their sophomore effort, or hell even a third release. Triplever displays with full brutality that they are a force that will be around for some time.
