The state of California is slowly opening back up after the pandemic. This is great news not just for society, but for us rabid concert attendees. Seeing small clubs and venues welcoming guests back is a tremendous thing. So I jumped at the chance to see JUNKYARD headlining at the Viper Room in Hollywood with LITTLE CAESAR as the opening act, two bands that gained their notoriety thanks to the club scene on the Sunset Strip in the late eighties and early nineties.
LITTLE CAESAR opened up the night of music. This was my first time ever seeing this band and I was impressed. Vocalist Ron Young was on point for the eleven songs in the set. Once the curtain was drawn he was commanding the stage and feeding off the loud and approving crowd. The most appreciated song of the night by the throng of fans was for “Chain of Fools” from their self-titled album from 1990. It was their version of Aretha Franklin’s hit song from 1967. However the last song of their set was the best. It was their cover of Merle Haggard’s song “Mama Tried” from 1968. You could feel the passion in Ron’s voice. I’m already looking forward to seeing this band again.
LITTLE CAESAR Setlist:
- "Drive It Home"
- "Rock n’ Roll State of Mind"
- "Hard Rock Hell"
- "Hard Times"
- "21 Again"
- "Chain of Fools"
- "Time Enough For That"
- "Straight Shooter"
- "Real Rock Drive"
- "Rum And Coke"
- "Mama Tried"
Headliner JUNKYARD took to the stage not to much later to continue the festivities. This was their second show in back to back nights. They opened the show with “Lifer”, a fairly new song from the band. This was my first time hearing this song and it felt like it could’ve been on their debut album from 1989. It was a great song to get the set started with. Lead singer David Roach started the night out sounding good. That’s until about halfway through their playlist. It seems that two nights in a row after a long hiatus due to the world shutting down was a little too much. Nevertheless he made up for it with his energy and devotion to the fans who were wildly singing along to every song. Now don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t terrible. In fact their rock n’ roll roots with a punk edge came out even more.
Overall this was a great fun show. Both bands gave it their all and it showed. I will definitely see both bands again. Now let’s open all the venues so more bands and fans can get together and enjoy this thing we call rock n’ roll.
JUNKYARD Setlist:
