Brand New Sin Live in Fayetteville, NC By Chris Hawkins, Contributor Wednesday, March 23, 2005 @ 10:05 AM
Admittedly, Metal fans below the Mason Dixon like their music loud, raunchy, and bluesy so it comes as no surprise that Brand New Sin fits right in despite their Northern heritage. Not unlike Zakk Wylde, it's almost impossible to tell that their brand of Southern Rock isn't actually from the South. Unfortunately, this town is home to two extremely large military bases, and with the current war going on, much of BNS's fan base was missing, leaving a less than stellar turn out.
Brand New Sin carried on, though. Having never seen the band, I didn't really know what to expect outside of the couple of songs I'd heard off their self-titled debut and the awesome 4-song EP, Black and Blue that Century Media so kindly sent my way. Let it be known as well, that I hold high octane, pure Rock very, very dear to my heart so I was obviously a bit more critical coming into this show than I would have been for another genre. It's hard not to be when COC resides about 45 minutes up the road. That's pretty much the bar around here.
When the band took the stage, it was as if there were a couple thousand people there instead of the slim attendance that was the harsh reality. One has to admire that dedication, how the band made sure to please all their fans regardless of number. Intensity, emotion, and precision encompassed their live show. Brand New Sin played songs with the quality and craftsmanship of COC or Down, and topped it off with the delivery of a band possessed and on fire. Amazing! The bassist, Chuck, especially impressed me, knowing when to keep it in the pocket and when to let it fly, all the while playing bass like it should be played (without a pick!!!) It must be said, though, that everyone in the band pulled their weight. The leads weren't too flashy yet not boring either, and the guitar tone itself embodied the overdriven Metal distortion with clarity that's too often lacking in bands these days. Add to that one super tight drummer and a singer who can actually sing and command the crowd, and the end result is simply put, one killer live band!
At the end of the day, Brand New Sin delivers the live show that's needed these days. This is the band to bring all your buddies with you to go see, get drunk, and go nuts. Hell, your girlfriend will probably dig it too. Be sure not to miss Brand New Sin on their upcoming tour with COC and Motorhead. You won't be disappointed.
