Austin, Texas’ finest hard rock band go for the throat on this stellar live album. Blastin’ out cuts from their two albums, as well as one previously unreleased tune (“Bonfire”), the five-piece wrecking crew known as Broken Teeth prove that hard rock ain’t dead, it’s just living in Texas and packin’ a shotgun.
Lead by vocal powerhouse Jason McMaster, he of Watchtower/Dangerous Toys fame, and featuring members of Dirty Looks and Pariah, Broken Teeth play AC/DC-inspired bluesy hard rock, ala Rose Tattoo, Angel City and the like. It’s that classic Aussie boogie sound: twin guitars, scorchin’ singer wailin’ over a steady one-note bass-line and four-on-the-floor beat. It worked then and sure as hell works now.
BT nail this live in the raw set to the fuckin’ wall from start to finish, blazing through every number like it’s the last real rock ‘n’ roll show on planet earth… and it might just be, kids. Highlights include the opening triple punch of the double-speed ultra-boogie “She’s Gonna Blow” into the High Voltage-esque “Pulled the Plug” into the gutbucket sleaze of “Stick It In” (which features the hilarious line “I wanna love you to death/ I wanna crystal your meth!”) Then the kick-drum starts the bludgeoning of “Chaingang,” which makes way for the relentless “Devil’s Money,” and… well… it just doesn’t stop after that. I could tell ya about the wrestling-frenzy of “Undertaker,” the foot-stompin’ Oye-power of “Guilty Pleasure” and the relentless hide-whompin’ of “El Diablo”… but then I’d have to kill you.
Until then, I can only tell you that if you dig having your ass kicked by big ol’ hard rock, and you think the best metal ever came out of the late-‘70s, and you are a real fuckin’ man, then you need to go score this bad boy. It’s the real deal, compadre. I’m crappin’ ya negative.
Now... I dare you to knock this battery off my shoulder, punk.
