Kix fans rejoice! Frontman/harmonica madman Steve Whiteman is back with his band Funny Money for their third studio effort, Skin To Skin, and all the classic elements of the winning Kix formula are in tact.
Want balls-to-the-wall AC/DC style rock? You got it with “Bad Luck” and “Nice Guys Finish Last.” Craving some hip shakin’ Aero boogie? Check out the title track, “Bump and Grind” and “You Rub Me The Right Way.” Dig that punk power pop? Try “Do Ya Wanna,” “Just One Dance” and “I Don’t Care About Everything” on for size. “She Turns” is nice and hypnotic, while “Sharp As Knives” will win any ‘80s hard rock fan over with ease. All strong tunes, all performed with hard rock aplomb and vigor.
As always, Whiteman blows some mean harp and sounds like the bastard son of Robin Zander and Steven Tyler, a bundle of maniacal yet melodic energy on every number. Really, the only thing lacking here is the production. Likely recorded in a home studio of some sort, the album sounds a bit demo-y. But it’s only rock ‘n’ roll and I like it, so what the fuck, right?
Hell, even Kix members Ronnie Younkins and Jimmy Chalfant make appearances, turning this into a reunion of the Baltimore dirty boys. Like I said, Kix fans rejoice.
