New York City’s “faux-German” punk-metal Devil-rockers return this year with more wry lyrics and crunchy-riff-laden music of their infamous shows in the Tri-State area that have almost, made them a household name… think “Turbonegro” meets “The Monkees” at the crossroads of “Metal Shop.” Lesion’s NYC shows are something beyond a spectacle: part TV-show about four drug-addled rock-stars who are constantly fighting their record company and part high-energy rock and roll with a nod to “camp.” Like The Upper Crust, from Boston, Lesion has an act and theme to accompany their music: but while The Upper Crust ape AC/DC in powdered-wigs and spats, Lesion’s music is across the board, and maybe a little harder to peg at first. Somewhere between early Judas Priest and the poppier songs of The Jam: Lesion, on their third record, showcase the music to the live “show” that proves that these four, uh, “Germans,”
do in fact, know how to rock… and not just for Satan!
All killer, no filler -- some highlights include:
“Girls Night Out,” a battle-cry for boozy, happy-hour sluts on the prowl for men,
that starts fast, (“Four foxy secretaries with their hair teased-out and their StarTacs totally charged..”), whips along to the lead singer’s winning Rob Halford impression on the chorus, (“Go! Go! GO! Girls Night Out!”), and features a guitar-break that has the girls drunkenly discussing their bar tab. Maybe not the fist-pumping junk on Nu-Metal rock-radio, but it’s fucking funny and fun to sing along to.
“I’m In The Industry,” their unbelievably catchy bass-driven “pop-song,” a damning first-person confession of a Major-Label A&R Rep who signs all the crappy bands…
“Wrought Iron,” a metaller about a metal girl, is dipped in a murky Sabbath groove.
“We Have Ways of Making You Talk,” the closer on the record: it sounds A LOT like Gene Simmons singing for Rancid. Should’ve been called, “We Have Ways of Making You Rock…” Awesome.
Lesion is a great live act that never disappoints: rock music for rock people who have a good sense of humor about rock-culture. They have finally managed to capture the
music-side of their shows with “FDP.” If you can’t see ‘em live -- check out their music and rock along with Lesion. You can download some of their music from their website --which explains a lot -- and even offers some of their earlier songs, including the live staple, “You’re Gay! (-But Not Like Homo)” and a rocked-up cover of “Heat-Miser” from The Year Without A Santa Claus…
