Smash is the fourth solo release by RATT frontman Stephen Pearcy, and this is the disc that Pearcy fans have long waited for. While many consider this to be a (strong) throwback to the 80’s, it really isn’t blatantly done. Sure, it has the elements but considering the music Pearcy has been making for over three decades and the genre he has fronted since then, nostalgic isn’t a word you would describe when listening to Smash. This is not a RATT formula styled release. Smash contains Pearcy’s integrity by encompassing the genre he helped mold instead of abusing it.

Pearcy also had famed producer Beau Hill onboard which added to the RATT signature of Pearcy’s sound. However, this disc is very diverse, as Pearcy doesn’t try to rehash the old in hopes of success. He simply embraces his past without trying to make it different, something that probably wouldn’t have worked. Instead Pearcy concentrates on his strengths – catchy chorus’ and memorable hooks, well written and well performed tunes. The most notable aspect on this disc for me was Pearcy’s voice, displaying a range of tones, was strong and powerful. Such tones throughout had me wondering if I would have recognized it without knowing it was him.

The diversity of the disc ranges from more pop style glam ("Lollipop") to heavier aspects such as "Dead Roses" and "Jamie". "I Know I’m Crazy" is the one track that bugs me and I just can’t really get in to, too much of a radio friendly format. "Ten Miles Wide" is more of a respectful nod to the past with hopes of airplay, but not over doing it. Sure, this could be the most ‘nostalgic’ style tune on the disc, but it’s just too catchy to dismiss. A full frontal rocker is found in the likes of "Hit Me With Your Bullet".

Another stellar tune is "What Do Ya Think". While this sounds like it could have easily been written doing Pearcy’s hey-day, the tune is a solid piece of music showing a lot of very strong elements from Pearcy.

Overall, get this disc. One of the better releases to celebrate all things Pearcy and his solo style of Ratt ‘n Roll. The one thing you can take to the bank is that Pearcy will constantly and consistently be writing new music that continues to grow. You might find a tune lacking here or there, but an overall summary is that it just works. Put it in your stereo and annoy the neighbors.
