JUDAS PRIEST Turbo 30th Anniversary Remaster By CrpnDeth, Staff Photographer/Writer Wednesday, January 11, 2017 @ 7:37 AM
The album has been remastered and will be released via Sony Music on February 3rd, 2017 on 3 CD (the original album and 2 bonus discs) as well as 1LP 150g vinyl.
Originally released in April of 1986, Turbo features all the hallmarks of classic PRIEST on tracks such as "Turbo Lover", "Parental Guidance" and "Locked In". Included on disc 2 and 3 of the CD reissue is the previously unreleased Live in Kansas City, a live recording from May 22 1986 while on the band's Fuel For Life tour in support of Turbo.
During that time for me was personally hard to get in to this disc. PRIEST was coming off their solid Screaming for Vengeance (July 1982) and Defenders of the Faith (January 1984) tours/releases and then took a turn and threw a bunch of synthesizers at us (to be fair, that was the era and I think every band suddenly found this 'new' instrument). They had a lot of metal competition as well during this era, as metal was raising the bar, making this release that much more brave: METALLICA's Master of Puppets came out March of '86, followed by MEGADETH's Peace Sells ... in Sept. of '86 and SLAYER's Reign in Blood in Oct. of '86, among others.
I also found the remaster interesting with the release of the live show in Kansas City. PRIEST....Live! was released June of '87 (the show was recorded at the Reunion Arena in Dallas on June 27th, 1986). This disc really didn't do well, and didn't even get Gold certification until 2001. Same tour and basically same setlist (the Kansas City show does include four songs not on PRIEST....Live! however). The one thing I never understood about the previous live release is why the band started the setlist with Out in the Cold and not a more uptempo tune to rile the fans up.
Regardless, the actual Turbo reissue sounds phenomenal. It feels like the guitars have sharper teeth in the riffs, the solos are perfectly clear and Rob's voice sounds as strong and concise as ever. Even the once dreaded synthesizers are bright and on the mark. It truly was a treat listening and reminiscing with "Locked In", "Parental Guidance", "Rock You All Around the World", and "Wild Nights, Hot & Crazy Days".
The next two live CD's - Live in Kansas City - are a staple of the PRIEST live show we have all seen over the years. The band is spot on, and you can feel the energy pouring from the stage. As you listen to it, you find yourself swaying left and right along with KK and Glenn. And of course, a few air punches along with Rob.
One of the better remasters to have come out in awhile, this release is definitely worth replacing your old worn out copy of Turbo.
