THE DEAD DAISIES
Make Some Noise

2016 Spitfire/SPV Records

THE DEAD DAISIES are a supergroup that have a revolving door of members, and have featured different lineups for each album. As they call it, this is a “musical collective” that includes rock veterans from Australian, British and American bands. There have been members of GUNS N’ ROSES, THIN LIZZY, WHITESNAKE, THE CULT, NINE INCH NAILS, THE ROLLING STONES and many other bands involved with THE DEAD DAISIES so far through three albums.

Debut album The Dead Daisies (2013) included former INXS and NOISEWORKS frontman Jon Stevens on vocals, and was a fairly retro-sounding bluesy record. The 2015 release Revolución featured Dizzy Reed (GUNS N’ ROSES), Tommy Clufetos (BLACK SABBATH/OZZY), Brian Tichy (WHITESNAKE), Marco Mendoza (THIN LIZZY) and featured John Corabi (MOTLEY CRUE/RATT) for some lead vocals. Guitarist David Lowy remains as the constant member throughout the band’s lineup. Revolución was an authentic rock album that featured vocals from Corabi, Stevens and Aussie rocker Jimmy Barnes, vocalist for COLD CHISEL. This album was a little more rocking than the debut, and the band really started to hone their sound, coming across as a group that had been together much longer than they actually had.

Lately, THE DEAD DAISIES have been making waves with relentless touring, garnering new fans with their quality third album Make Some Noise. This album features John Corabi on vocals on all songs, new guitarist Doug Aldrich (WHITESNAKE, DIO), guitarist David Lowy, bassist Marco Mendoza and drummer Brian Tichy. I am a fan of all of these guys, so I was looking forward to hearing this album. I was not disappointed.

In my opinion, this is the band’s best album by far. The songs are all hard rocking, with big choruses. Corabi’s bluesy voice has more than enough character and rasp to grab your attention. On Make Some Noise, he has embraced his inner Steven Tyler. Meanwhile, Doug Aldrich just lets the riffs flow from his Les Paul like only he can. The guitar tone on this album is monstrous.

Opener “Long Way To Go” sets the tone and kicks the door down. “We All Fall Down” swings with a groove while Aldrich and Lowy trade licks and Mendoza lays down a walking bass line in the background. “Song And A Prayer” begins with a JUDAS PRIEST-style lick and features some really cool lead guitar riffs throughout. A very catchy chorus accentuates this track. “Mainline” is a monster up-tempo rock song. Title track “Make Some Noise” is an instant classic power chord nod to crowd participation tracks like “We Will Rock You”, and is a live staple of their shows. There is a fantastic solo in this song as well. The cover of CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL’s “Fortunate Son” is among the best versions of this song I have ever heard. “Last Time I Saw The Sun” recalls an AEROSMITH “Draw The Line” style groove. “Mine All Mine” has a ton of swagger, while “How Does It Feel” allows Corabi and Tichy to show off their skills. “Freedom” might be the heaviest song on the album; what a sick riff on this track! “All The Same” is another enjoyable track. The album ends with an excellent cover of THE WHO’s “Join Together”, featuring harmonica by Suzie McNeil.

Make Some Noise contains 12 songs at around 45 minutes. To be honest, there isn’t a bad song on this album, and there are no ballads. This is a really solid rock and roll record! The mix and engineering are very well done. I am really digging the dynamic sound of this album. Make Some Noise reminds me a lot of AEROSMTIH in their prime. The slick packaging of the digipak (which includes a sticker) is nicely done as well. There is no stopping this band if they keep this going. Make Some Noise is one of the best rock records in recent memory. I’m looking forward to the next album!
