Rob Zombie To Host First-Ever Comic-Con Opening Party By DJ WILL, KNAC.COM Personality Sunday, June 24, 2012 @ 10:47 AM
Presented by VH1 Classic in San Diego's Petco Park, the event will feature live music spun by DJ Will from the network's "That Metal Show" as well as special previews of Rob Zombie's upcoming music project, out Aug. 7, featuring new remixes of his biggest hits by popular DJs.
Historically, Comic-Con has not had much of a musical presence, though last summer's confab saw Adult Swim host Girl Talk for a special party. VH1's exec VP of creative and consumer marketing Nigel Cox-Hagan says the Comic-Con culture of comics, sci-fi, fantasy and horror "has a major influence on popular music, particularly hard rock and heavy metal."
"And that influence is reciprocal. We felt the connection was organic and that VH1 Classic, a pop culture brand that celebrates iconic artists and their music, could create an amazing event that embraces both music and Comic-Con," he continues.
As for Zombie, a previous Comic-Con attendee for panels promoting his two remakes of the "Halloween" franchise, the partnership was a no-brainer.
"Perhaps no one exemplifies the intersection of music and the culture celebrated at comic con more than Rob Zombie, a rock star who is not only a superfan, but also a cult horror filmmaker and artist," Cox-Hagan says.
Other activities planned for "Dawn of the Con" include a digital photo booth to pose with the drag racer from Zombie's "Dragula" music video; hourly giveaways of limited-edition collectible posters and a custom-pressed T-shirt bar.
