EMISSIONS FROM THE MONOLITH IV: FOURTH ANNUAL STONER ROCK
FESTIVAL AT NYABINGHI IN YOUNGSTOWN, OH
Memorial Day Weekend: Friday, 5/24 - Sunday, 5/26
Three Days, 35 Bands, featuring Orange Goblin, Spirit Caravan,
Alabama Thunder Pussy, Bottom, Electric Frankenstein and more
Youngstown, OH -- Festival producer, Greg Barratt, announced his fourth annual stoner rock festival, Emissions From The Monolith IV, today. The festival lasts three days over Memorial Day Weekend, from Friday, May 24th through Sunday, May 26th. The festival takes place at Nyabinghi, which is located in Youngstown, OH at 1229 Salt Springs Road, approximately one hour outside of Cleveland and an hour from Pittsburgh, PA.
High Times Magazine and KNAC.com both endorsed Emissions 2001. Media that supported last year’s event early on included MTV2 News, Alternative Press, Metal Maniacs, Stonerrock.com, King VelVeeda’s Cheesygraphics.com as well as local weeklies like Cleveland Free Times, Cleveland Scene, In Pittsburgh and dailies like Cleveland Plain Dealer and Warren Tribune Chronicle. In 2001, San Francisco-based pop artist Alan Forbes (best known for creating the latest Offspring album art as well as the Black Crowes’ trade mark magpie logo) created a poster for the event.
For last year’s festival the Warren Tribune Chronicle wrote “The emissions coming from Nyabinghi this weekend will be the sounds of more than 30 bands who fall under the loosely defined category “stoner rock.” The Cleveland Plain Dealer put the festival and the bands in perspective reporting “Spirit Caravan is one of 34 bands who will be playing...most [bands] play the sludgy, plodding, riff-driven style that, for better or worse has become known as stoner rock...in the last 10 years, bands such as Fu Manchu, Queens of the Stone Age, Monster Magnet, High on Fire, Nebula, and others have jumped into the fray.”
Emissions From The Monolith was founded in 1999 and since has become an annual event. Greg Barratt, owner of both the venue, Nyabinghi, and the booking agency, Tone Deaf Touring, conceived of the festival. The festival became a way to have all of his favorite stoner, doom, heavy rock and psychedelic bands play in a comfortable environment amongst like-minded musicians and fans. The festival is fast becoming one of the most important stops on any stoner rock band’s tour schedule. Emissions From The Monolith is solidifying its position as a SXSW/CMJ-style event for fans of heavy, often underground, music.
This year’s festival will feature performances by 35 bands including headliners Orange Goblin, Spirit Caravan, Alabama Thunder Pussy, Bottom and Electric Frankenstein. The event is an 18-and-over, indoor festival -- the parking lot yields plenty of interaction between bands and fans throughout the three days. In addition to band performances, booths will feature related merchandise for sale. Companies that have already confirmed attendance include Underdogma, Small Stone Records, Game Two, Meteorcity and Tee Pee. Several companies are interested in sponsoring the event. Sponsors will be announced as they are confirmed.
The venue is located approximately one hour outside of Cleveland and is an hour away from Pittsburgh, PA. It can easily be accessed from the I-80 interstate. See the website, www.emissionsfromthemonolith.com, for specific directions or contact festival organizers directly at [email protected] for door-to-door routing and directions.
Tickets are now on sale online and will be available at the door until the room sells out. Tickets are $10.00 Friday 5/24, $15.00 Saturday 5/25 and $20.00 Sunday 5/26 or $45.00 for the weekend. Fans attending the festival from any country outside of the continental U.S. and Canada will be offered free admission. Venue capacity is 500.
Lodging is readily available. Several hotels are within a few miles of the venue and are reasonably priced. The closest hotels include Comfort Inn (330-759-3180) which has the highest rate of pre-booked rooms this year, Tallyho (330-759-4092), Holiday Inn Metroplex (330-759-0606) and Super 8 (330-759-0400) to name a few. Food vendors will set up outside the club. There is also a “rocker” friendly diner one block away and several other restaurants in the vicinity.
Emissions From The Monolith IV will provide press passes to accredited media interested in covering the event. Interviews with festival organizer, Greg Barratt, and all the bands performing can be arranged both ahead of time (via Fly PR) and/or be conducted impromptu at the festival. Fly PR will be on hand to help facilitate interviews at the festival.
Last year the event drew close to 800 people. This year the promoter estimates the venue will sell out every night. Highlights from last year’s festival included performances by Spirit Caravan, Raging Slab, Five Horse Johnson, Disengage, Warhorse and Boulder. The Cleveland Free Times reviewed last year’s festival, enthusing “Perhaps the cheekiest set of the fest came from New York biker-rock hustlers Kung Pao, the only band I’ve ever seen aside from Mötörhead that has cup-holders for their beers on their mike stands. Clad head-to-toe in denim, Kung Pao adorned the stage with a denim flag and threw out sampler cassettes wrapped in, yup, denim.” The festival has helped to solidify the stoner rock movement that has recently been hailed by Rolling Stone, Guitar World and Alternative Press magazines as the number one up-and-coming music trend.
