Great White - Station Fire Update: Club Owners Go On Trial By Newsferatu, Writer Sunday, September 3, 2006 @ 10:02 AM
Jury selection begins Tuesday in the manslaughter trial of one of the owners of the Rhode Island nightclub where 100 people died in a fire.
More than 200 others were injured when a pyrotechnic display for a rock band set fire to foam soundproofing, trapping people in an inferno.
Brothers Michael and Jeffrey Derderian co-owned The Station nightclub and are to be tried separately, starting with Michael.
The rock band's manager, who actually set off the indoor fireworks, is serving four years in a plea deal.
The Derderians' lawyers contend they didn't know the band was going to use fireworks and didn't know the foam was flammable.
Prosecutors say they did know, and also point to a number of other failings including overcrowding, unlit exit signs and an exit door that opened the wrong way.
