Nugent Offers To Shoot Bears After Fatal Mauling By Newsferatu, Writer Wednesday, August 31, 2005 @ 3:49 AM
Winnipeg - Rocker and hunting enthusiast Ted Nugent has volunteered to shoot bears in Manitoba following a fatal mauling of a 68-year-old man in the province last week.
In an e-mail to a Winnipeg newspaper, the guitarist known as "The Motor City Madman" offered his condolences to the family of East Selkirk farmer Harvey Robinson, who was killed by a black bear while picking plums on his property on Friday.
Nugent also said in the e-mail he believes his hunting skills would help protect people from bears.
"I hope to come to Manitoba soon to put my 'hands-on' some precious bear renewability, spending massive amounts of money and untold family conservation time in the wonderful wilds of beautiful Manitoba as a clear benefit to the wild and the people," he wrote.
Nugent, who hails from Detroit, is known for hits in the 1970s including ‘Stranglehold’ and ‘Cat Scratch Fever’.
Famous at that time for his wild behavior, he is now well-known now for his outspoken stands on hunting rights and gun ownership. His most recent best-selling book is called Kill It And Grill It.
During a visit to Winnipeg in 2000, when he was the keynote speaker at a hunting conference, Nugent told the crowd that animal rights activists are misguided for opposing hunting.
Nugent's e-mail did not say when he would arrive in Manitoba.
He continued in the letter to praise the province for its conservation policies - a direct contrast to its neighbour.
Nugent used to fly regularly to Ontario to hunt. But when the province banned its spring bear hunt in 1999, Nugent vowed never to set foot there again.
