Bret Michaels in Rhode Island By Debby Rao, Boston Contributor Friday, June 20, 2008 @ 5:52 AM
This was my first time visiting Twin Rivers, and I have to say it was very enjoyable. Although the venue is much smaller than Foxwoods or Mohegan, the small arena had a great sound system and hospitable staff. Bret Michaels hit the stage at 9:30 P.M to perform a 70 - minute set including a few songs off of his latest album,” Rock My World", plus all of the Poison hits.
Opening with,” Talk Dirty To me", the female dominated crowd rushed the stage to get a glimpse of the VH1 TV star. Bret was in a great mood, as the band slammed into,” Look What The Cat Dragged In". It was amazing to see what a Number one show on VH1 can do to re-launch an 80's star back into the spotlight front and center. There is no doubt about it; Bret was a ball of energy as he pranced around the stage during,"Unskinny Bop". Bret was very gracious and also thanked the audience for making,” Rock of Love", the Number One show in VH1 history.
Bret's solo band was very good. Guitarist Pete Evick played the Poison songs with a passion, as the rhythm section of bassist Dirty Ray, and drummer Lucky Chucky held down the rhythm. I also liked the addition of keyboard player Robi Wylde. Big John filmed the concert onstage, and it was cool to see how he has become almost as popular as Bret during the Meet and Greet.
Bret performed three songs off of,” Rock My World" including the rocking song,” Driven", "Bittersweet", and my favorite,” All I Ever Needed" with Bret playing acoustic guitar. Bret took a moment to inform the audience that he takes his solo band very seriously, as much as he does Poison.
One of the most moving moments of the set occurred during the song,” Something To Believe In", Bret payed tribute to the Troops in Iraq, and also to the RI Station Fire victims. Bret told the audience that his band visited Iraq for three weeks, and he saw first hand the courage that they endured. Bret also played acoustic guitar versus the piano version.
Highlights of the set included,” Your Mama Don't Dance", and "Fallen Angel". Bret and company had everyone dancing in the aisles. Another favorite was,” Every Rose Has It's Thorn". Bret is the perfect front man, always including the audience to participate in his show with special singalongs such as on this ballad. Where the audience sang in unison throughout the entire song.
After the concert, there was a silent auction to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Association with signed Bret Michael’s items including a signature Bret Michael’s cowboy hat. Members of the band did a meet and greet, as well as Big John. Be sure to check out Poison this summer on the "Live, Raw, and Uncut" tour this summer. If this concert is any indication of the good time had by all, you are in for,” Nothing But A Good Time". Also joining Poison this summer are Dokken and Sebastian Bach.
