Both STYX and REO SPEEDWAGON are no strangers to playing full albums. In fact, both bands over this past winter had Las Vegas residencies with each performing one of their iconic releases in its entirety, REO with Hi Infidelity and STYX with The Grand Illusion. Unfortunately the Hi Infidelity shows would be the last to take place under the REO SPEEDWAGON name, which was a very convoluted situation which I will not expand on in this review. Google it if you're really interested. At any rate, both residencies were solid successes and as such, these two Classic Rock acts joined forces along with longtime EAGLES guitarist/songwriter Don Felder for 'The Brotherhood Of Rock' Tour which kicked off on May 28th. The 'Brotherhood' made a stop in Texas at The Woodlands Pavilion just north of Houston on June 6th.

The stage production for this tour at first glance was very unassuming with very little in the way of stage props, etc save for an enormous LED screen in the back. It was however there for all 3 bands to make use of in their individual shows which was a nice touch since normally opening acts don't get that perk. Also of note is that there was only a 15 minute stage changeover between each of the bands and it ran like a well-oiled machine in that regard with every performance running exactly on time.

Don Felder, who spent nearly 30 years as a guitarist in the EAGLES, was up first. Felder wasn't just an axe slinger for the group, he also had a hand in writing some of the bands most notable songs such as "Victim Of Love", "Those Shoes" and the legendary hit "Hotel California". As the opener for the tour he was actually given an impressive 10-song set comprised of EAGLES hits such as "One Of These Nights", "Take It Easy", "Life In The Fast Lane" and the aforementioned "Victim Of Love", a couple of tunes that the EAGLES covered in opener "Already Gone" and "Seven Bridges Road" and even a couple of Don's own songs including a brand new single just recently released, "I Like The Things You Do". And let's not forget the namesake tune from the movie Heavy Metal, "Heavy Metal (Takin' A Ride)". At 77 (!?) years of age Felder still has the chops and he is having the time of his life out there onstage with his smile evident almost from the moment he stepped out front. Of course Felder donned a Gibson double-neck guitar for his finale, "Hotel California". And just like that the evening was underway.

Setlist:

  • "Already Gone"
  • "One of These Nights"
  • "Victim of Love"
  • "Seven Bridges Road"
  • "I Like The Things You Do"
  • "Heavy Metal (Takin' a Ride)"
  • "Take It Easy"
  • "Heartache Tonight"
  • "Life In The Fast Lane"
  • "Hotel California"
I guess now would be as good a time as any to mention that I had just celebrated my 60th birthday just 2 days prior to this show. I bring it up because I'm old enough to have seen REO SPEEDWAGON back in their heyday on the Hi Infidelity Tour and on the follow-up tour for the subsequent record Good Trouble. AND, one of the first vinyl albums I ever owned was the 1977 live album Live: You Get What You Play For that was my first listen to what would become my favorite song from them, "Ridin' The Storm Out".

Even though it isn't called REO any longer, the band backing vocalist Kevin Cronin is basically the same guys that have been playing with him for years under the REO moniker such as guitarist Dave Amato who has been with the band for over 35 years. As promised, the band took the stage with "Don't Let Him Go", then "Keep On Loving You" and "Follow My Heart" as KCB performed that entire album in order. Other notable tracks on that record, "Take It On The Run", "Tough Guys" and "Shakin' It Loose" were all performed with precision and finesse as the crowd was thrown back to the best days of rock and roll, the 80's.

Following the album's conclusion, the rest of the KCB set was a 'Best of' affair starting with "Keep Pushin'" and "Time For Me To Fly". To my satisfaction, "Ridin' The Storm Out" also made the set and given the fact that I hadn't seen REO since the early 80's that song definitely took me back to my childhood. The band finished off their night with a pair of encores, "Can't Fight This Feeling", which now every time makes me think of that antacid commercial with a chicken wrap running through the airport (LOL), and "Roll With The Changes". Two bands down, one to go.

Setlist:

  • "Don't Let Him Go"
  • "Keep On Loving You"
  • "Follow My Heart"
  • "In Your Letter"
  • "Take It on the Run"
  • "Tough Guys"
  • "Out of Season"
  • "Shakin' It Loose"
  • "Someone Tonight"
  • "I Wish You Were There"
  • "Keep Pushin'"
  • "Time for Me to Fly"
  • "Ridin' the Storm Out"
Encore:
  • "Can't Fight This Feeling"
  • "Roll With the Changes"
Even though last year's tour with FOREIGNER was only my second time seeing the band (at least to my recollection, with the first time being the 1983 Texxas Jam which was co-headlined with Sammy Hagar), another of my very first vinyl albums was the STYX masterpiece, Pieces Of Eight. I never owned The Grand Illusion release but was quite familiar with its songs, as I'm sure many others of you are, and I certainly have never heard the opus in its entirety, either on a turntable or in concert so I was looking forward to this, and it did not disappoint.

As with the KCB set, The Grand Illusion was played in full, in order beginning with the title track and "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)". This particular record has plenty of gems on it like the epic "Come Sail Away" and the rollicking "Miss America", but even the lesser known tunes like "Superstars" and "Castle Walls" were done with precision and flair, with vocalist Lawrence Gowan, also the ringleader of the STYX spectacle, leading the charge along with iconic members, guitarists James 'JY' Young and Tommy Shaw and even bassist Chuck Panozzo, who still gets to come out and perform with the rest of the band for several songs every night, which is a classy move in and of itself by the band in honoring his contributions and legacy.

After The Grand Illusion, STYX also launched into other hits, "Rockin' The Paradise", "Too Much Time On My Hands", "Lady" and "The Best Of Times". But also of note here is that, unlike the other bands on the tour, STYX is still putting out new music and had just recently announced and released on CD and vinyl their new record Circling From Above, and to that end, their set included one track from that release, also the first single and video, "Build And Destroy".

The band capped things off with "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)" before retreating briefly and then returning for a pair of encores, "Mr. Roboto" an "Renegade".

Setlist:

  • "The Grand Illusion"
  • "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)"
  • "Superstars"
  • "Come Sail Away"
  • "Miss America"
  • "Man in the Wilderness"
  • "Castle Walls"
  • "The Grand Finale"
  • "Rockin' the Paradise"
  • "Too Much Time on My Hands"
  • "Lady"
  • "Build and Destroy"
  • "The Best of Times"
  • "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)"
Encore:
  • "Mr. Roboto"
  • "Renegade"
The Brotherhood Of Rock Tour could be classified as a nostalgia trek of sorts given that the average age of those in attendance was probably into the 50s, but there were also plenty of the younger generation as well and this was a nice way for them to experience music from some classic rock heavyweights. The tour continues all summer long until late August so there will be plenty of chances across the country for you to catch this show! Check it out if they come near you!
