No Fear Tour - Part 1 with Killswitch Engage

Almost a month into the No Fear tour and Killswitch Engage finally made it to my neck of the woods in Mesa, Arizona, I’ve anxiously awaited this show for quite a while and the KSE boys definitely did not disappoint! One of my main concerns was whether or not guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz would be playing on the bill because of a nasty back injury sustained on the European tour. The bad news is that Adam D. is still recuperating from his surgery to fix the injury; the good news is that Adam’s shredder shoes were aptly filled by Pat Lachman, who may be better known by some as the vocalist for Damageplan. I don’t know how much chemistry there had previously been between Lachman and KSE, but it seemed like he’d been with them for years.
The dual thrashing guitars complimented by massive amounts of harmonics and full on super chunk riffing was in full effect and definitely summoned fires from the very pits of hell into our humble desert town. Singer Howard Jones’ guttural screams and melodic lines were all delivered almost perfectly. Jones also has a commanding presence over the crowd in that he elicited one of the biggest circle pits I’ve ever seen, and when he said he wanted to see some crowd surfing a literal wave of bodies started pouring over the front barriers right in front of the stage.
The set was amazing, and as expected most of the catalog was from the recent As Daylight Dies, but there were plenty of crowd favorites played from the entire KSE catalog such as Rose of Sharon, The End of the Heartache, Fixation on the Darkness and a whole slew of others. They closed the show with a cover of Dio’s Holy Diver which sent the crowd into a frenzy.
Killswitch Engage is one of those bands that sounds amazing in the studio, but sounds PHENOMENAL live! The amount of energy in the Mesa Amphitheatre was intense to say the least. This is Killswitch Engage’s first American headlining tour and it was obvious that the band was hell bent on putting on the best show possible and they proved beyond a reason of doubt that they will continue to gain fans and tear up venues across the country. This is one tour that shouldn’t be missed.
