Yearly Dose of Slayer Doubled in January: Kimmel and San Diego By A Headbanger, Do You Bang Head? Tuesday, January 30, 2007 @ 9:39 PM
So it’s Friday the 19th and I’m just getting home from work and all day I was rocking out to Slayer in my head, largely thanks to KNAC.COM. After I strolled down Hollywood blvd. looking for the outdoor stage behind the corner of Highland and Hollywood, it was easy to tell once I saw the other groups of Slayer-hedz waiting in line. Some I heard were there since early in the morning. That, and the fact that I didn’t have a ticket to the Kimmel show made me think I wasn’t going to get in.
We all stood outside the fence though and got a treat! Slayer practiced ”Eyes Of The Insane” and ”Jihad” for the show. So around 7:30p or so they slowly let people in, tapping everyone down, and sending them through a metal detector. I met a friend who had a spare ticket, but GOD HATES US ALL… the line got cut off rite in front of me! Some security dude came out and stated that the fire marshal said they were over capacity. A large horde of us ran out to the adjacent parking structure, and tried to catch the show from the top deck. A little while after I realized they were letting more people in, and HAHA!…I got in! Unfortunately we had to stand throughout the whole Kimmel show. The people that were lucky enough to get in were instructed to chant Slayer-Slayer-Slayer, for the cameras…yeah, right. Like we need to be told that. Kimmel came out and said this was the largest crowd ever, most request for tickets to come see Slayer… that’s right biyatch!! RESPECT!!! So they busted out with ”Eyes Of The Insane” for the show, then for the ending credits whipped out ”jihad”… these pits were pretty cool and fun! I ate it on the last song. Bodies flying, hey! Who snuck in a beer? Hahaha. Then, we were treated again with more tunes; ”Mandatory Suicide”, “War Ensemble”, “Dead Skin Mask”, “Raining Blood”. I took a few bad pix with my camera phone. I will eventually post these up somewhere for you all to check out!!!
When I realized the Wiltern was afraid holding this monster, I realized I had to take a drive to San Diego. And after a 3 1/2 hour drive, that should have only taken 2 (thanks O.C. for the traffic) and after the awesome buffalo chicken sandwich at Denny’s, I finally arrived at the awesome venue known as SOMA. This place is a great small intimate venue, especially for Slayer who said they were really looking forward to getting up close and personal with the fans. Got there about 7p and it was well before the actual show time.
With sporadic shouts of Slayer-Slayer-Slayer during the pre-game warm-up, Unearth bravely hit the stage about 8:30. Goddamn that shit was loud! I’m really not too much into this ‘nu-hardcore-metal’, but judging by the flying fists, the KIDS were into it, pumping everyone up. Commanding them to pit, and crowd surf. Bodies flying everywhere of course made it difficult to stand, so there was only 1 way out…UP!
I’m not familiar with Unearth, so I don’t have a set-list of the songs played.
Now down to the nitty-gritty for all you A.D.D./ Stoners! More chants of Slayer filled the room and at about 10/10:30p the lights went out, and the pits started rolling. The intro to ”God Hates Us All fueled our adrenaline and away we went…TO HELL!!!
Set-list (not necessarily in order, sorry… I was too busy enjoying the show):
It happened so fast, I Hope I didn’t miss any, and dam my neck was sore for the rest of the weekend…OK, I’m done.
