"I will still have a part with songwriting and production [with EVERGREY], but otherwise I'm gone,"

Progressive Heavy Metal act EVERGREY was founded in 1993 by guitarist and vocalist Tom S. Englund. They have amassed a catalog of 14 studio albums in their 30+ years of existence. Their latest album Theories of Emptiness was released on June 7, 2024 through Napalm Records.

As the album's release date drew near, an announcement was made that shocked a lot of fans and the band as well. Their longtime drummer, songwriter, and producer Jonas Ekdahl decided he was no longer going to tour with the group after 20 years of traveling the globe multiple times over. Ekdahl maintains that he will still be contributing to the band's future studio releases, but time will tell if that holds true.

I had the chance to speak with Jonas Ekdahl prior to the release of EVERGREY's latest opus Theories of Emptiness to find out more about the album and more about his future. Ekdahl also discusses how the band reacted to his departure, how new bassist Johan Niemann helped enhance the band's songwriting, getting stuck in their music video make up, the nerdy connection between their last two videos, guest musicians Jonas Renkse (KATATONIA) and Salina Englund, his most memorable and forgettable gigs with EVERGREY, and much, much more.

* LISTENER NOTE - some of Jonas' audio was inaudible and could not be corrected. What had to be cut or what still sounds muffled, does not take away from the general content of the interview.
