The Bowl For Ronnie is an annual celebrity bowling tournament held at PINZ Bowling Center in Studio City, California, hosted by broadcast personality Eddie Trunk. After 3 years of waiting due to the coronavirus pandemic this 2022 Bowl For Ronnie was yet again a sold-out event that honored the legacy of the Legendary Ronnie James Dio. Over $72,000 was raised for the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund (www.diocancerfund.org) this year. The Dio Cancer Fund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable fund formed in honor of Ronnie James Dio, who lost his life to stomach cancer on May 16, 2010. As we all know, cancer is a deadly disease that robs families of loved ones, and the fund is dedicated to support cancer prevention research, raise awareness, and educate the public with the focus that early detection and prevention saves lives.

The Dio Cancer Fund has committed funds to support the research of Dr. David Wong and his team at the UCLA School of Dentistry in developing a simple, non-invasive saliva test for the early detection of cancer, which is in keeping with the Fund’s mission of cancer prevention, research and education. Dr Wong announced that he will name his laboratory at UCLA in Ronnie James Dio’s name!

The life of the late Steve Strange, one of the founding partners of international live music agency, X-Ray Touring, was celebrated by friends and colleagues. Strange, who passed away from cancer in September of 2021, was an avid bowler, and this year’s bowling event coincides with the first anniversary of his funeral last year. All of the trophies and medals awarded this year had Steve Strange’s photo as a tribute to him.

Eddie Trunk was speaking proudly of the DIO documentary: Dreamers Never Die (diodreamersneverdie.com). Ronnie James Dio's story transcends the standard rock documentary. Beautifully highlighting both his powerful voice and his gentle heart, DIO: Dreamers Never Die delves deep into the singer’s incredible rise from ’50s doo-wop crooner to his early rock days in ELF and RAINBOW, to replacing Ozzy Osbourne in BLACK SABBATH, and finally cementing his rockstar status with his own band, DIO. The first documentary to be authorized by the artist’s estate, the film incorporates never-before-seen footage and personal photos from Dio’s archives as well as offering intimate scenes with his closest peers, family, and friends, among them Wendy Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Glenn Hughes, Vinny Appice, Lita Ford, Rob Halford, Sebastian Bach, Eddie Trunk and Jack Black as they bring viewers inside the life of one of the most beloved figures in rock.

The attendees to the Bowl For Ronnie 2022 were first of all, Wendy Dio. But also included: Ronnie’s doctor during the cancer treatment Dr Sandeep Kapoor (co-founder Ronnie James Dio Cancer Fund), Dr David Wong (UCLA COOR director), Jack Black (Tenacious D), DIO band members Bjorn Englen, Scott Warren and Simon Wright, Rowan Robertson (Dio, DC4), Rob “Blasko” Nicholson (Ozzy Osbourne), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Lita Ford, Jesse Hughes and Jennie Vee (Eagles of Death Metal), Mark Chaussee (Danzig), Roy Mayorga, Cesar Soto, Monte Pittman and John Bechdel (Ministry), Doug Aldrich (The Dead Daisies), Tim “Ripper” Owens, Harry Conklin and Sean Peck (The Three Tremors), Dave “Chili” Moreno, Jason Cornwell, Chas West, Roy Z and Jimmy Burkhard (West Bound), Brent Woods (Sebastian Bach, Chevy Metal), Tyler Connolly (Theory of a Deadman), actor/musician Sean McNabb (Lynch Mob), guitarist Bobby Keller, Richie Kotzen (Winery Dogs), Brett Scallions (Fuel), Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats), Marty O’Brien (Daughtry), Star Fields (Sons of Anarchy), record producers Joe Barresi and Jay Ruston, singer Em Beihold, Ann Boleyn (Hellion), actors Al Coronel (The Last Ship) and Matt Duncan (DC4), Shawn Duncan (LA Guns, DC4), Abby Gennet (Slunt), DJ Will (KNAC), Ari Kamin (Adler’s Appetite), Julia Lage (Vixen), Howie Simon (Winger), Zak St. John and Ricky Warwick (Black Star Riders), entrepreneur Ahmet Zappa and his sister, actress Diva Zappa.
