Nine Inch Nails in Toledo By Newsferatu, Writer Wednesday, March 1, 2006 @ 8:50 AM
Hello, I just had to tell you about the big show last night at the Toledo
Sports Arena in Toledo Tuesday night, February 21st, the first big show to
come to Toledo so far this young year.
Nine Inch Nails was the headliner, and the opening band was a band I'm not familiar with called Moving Units.
Moving Units played about 8 or 9 songs, and I'd say they're a cross between
The Cure, Taproot, and Incubus. Not as heavy as Nine Inch Nails, but
appropriate enough for the show. For any information on them, their website is
http://www.movingunits.net.
They were okay from my standpoint, given the fact I've never heard any of
their songs before and never heard of them before the day before the show.
After them was Nine Inch Nails, who used a pair of smoke machines before and
during their set. I tell you what, I've seen A LOT of bands, at the Sports
Arena and at various places in Toledo, Detroit, Cleveland, Grand Rapids, and
Madison, WI, and I'd have to say that Nine Inch Nails is somewhere in the
top 6 or 7 I've seen, and definately the top two or three best band I've
seen at the Sports Arena being the mighty Pantera and Rob Zombie. They
hardly stopped inbetween songs, hardly ever said anything to the crowd
except the periodical "Thank You" to the crowd after a song. It was pretty
much nonstop from one song to the next, in all about 20 songs they played.
As far what they played, third song in they played "Terrible Lie," about ten
songs in they played a pair of songs that had seen some radio play back to
back, "Closer" (or as I like to call it, the "I want to fuck you like an
animal" song) and "Burn" off of the "Natural Born Killers" soundtrack. They
played several songs off of their new CD "With Teeth" as well as several
other songs off of arguably their biggest CD "The Downward Spiral".
Including "Closer" they also played "March of the Pigs" among others. They
ended their over two hour set by playing "Dead Souls" off of 1994's "The
Crow" soundtrack, "The Hand That Feeds" off of their "With Teeth" CD, and my
personal favorite-"Head Like A Hole". There was no encore set unfortunately,
which leads me to my only disappointment of the whole thing. Of the songs
left off the set, NIN didn't play "Piggy," "Hurt," off of "The Downward
Spiral", or "We're In This Together" from "The Fragile" CD. The light show
throughout was awesome, and the band was very hypered up. Through the whole
set Trent Rezner was literally bouncing around like a jackrabbit that just
drank ten cups of coffee, going from guitar to guitar, to keyboard, to
tamborine, to just throwing his mic stand around like he was trying out for
the New York Yankees.
