“For me, 40 years playing in a band is just a number. It’s nothing special. I’m looking forward.”

German Thrash Metal band SODOM has been crushing ears and kicking ass since 1982. In honor of their 40th Anniversary, SODOM frontman TOM ANGELRIPPER decided to revisit the band’s back catalog in a unique way. A greatest hits album would have been too on the nose.
40 Years at War: The Greatest Hell of Sodom consists of one song from each SODOM album from 1985-2020, re-recorded with their current line-up. The twist is, SODOM chose a ‘deep cut’ rather than an obvious song from each of the albums.
The collection comes in several formats and configurations, including a deluxe box set that includes a 72 page book and a bonus CD of music that includes one new song, “1982”. I had the chance to speak with TOM ANGELRIPPER ahead of the album’s release.
Highlights include:
-Discussion of 40 Years at War
-Why re-recordings over a 'best of' collection
-Relearning material that hasn’t been played in decades
-Honoring the contributions of the late Uwe Christophers
-Breaking down the deluxe box set
-Putting artwork together
-The return of guitarist Frank Blackfire
-SODOM touring plans
-Why SODOM has only toured the US once
-Why two unique versions of Obsessed By Cruelty (1986)
-SODOM back catalog re-releases
-Their next studio album
-And much, much more
