Interview By Mike Lewis
CHTHONIC is a band who is no stranger to controversy nor politics. Their first tour as part of the 2007 Ozzfest lineup found them stopping by the United Nations and pleading the case for Taiwan to be recognized as an independent nation. Fast-forward seven years and Taiwan saw the Sunflower Movement where activists temporarily seized control of the national legislation, an action which led to frontman Freddy Lim eventually running for parliament in Taiwan and winning. On mainland China, CHTHONIC has been banned due to their political activism but Freddy as well as the other members of the band have never let that stop them from trying to improve the political climate for the future of Taiwan. Recently Nancy Pelosi made a visit to Taiwan, an action which has gotten both negative and positive press. Freddy and I discussed this briefly before her visit and decided to sit down and talk about that, as well as other issues in Taiwan, over Zoom in a meet that was very overdue. There may even be some new music from CHTHONIC in the very near future as you’ll learn in the interview.
