While I had never attended a GWAR show, I heard what happened at one. I asked about the blood and my camera down in the pit. He said, don’t worry, the blood arcs over you into the crowd. The joke was on me in the end, as there was no arc and I ended up being a direct target. It was a blast just the same.
A lot has changed with GWAR in twenty years. GWAR is not just a band, but they are a brand. They have become part of the culture. The controversies GWAR stirred up back in the day have almost become commonplace today. It’s as if GWAR has completed their mission of conquering the world.
Their latest concept album, The New Dark Ages (Review on KNAC.COM HERE), displays a more refined and accessible sound from GWAR. While the live show still remains the centerpiece of GWAR’s repertoire, it’s clear the music is becoming just as memorable. I had the chance to speak with The Berserker Blóthar (Michael Bishop) shortly after the album’s release.
