“I don’t really care about the comparisons [to Eddie Van Halen]”

Canadian guitar sensation Jacob Deraps has been compared to the late Eddie Van Halen since he was 14 years old. The comparisons were fueled mainly by Jacob’s YouTube videos featuring note-for-note and tone-for-tone covers of VAN HALEN classics. The summer of 2022 marks the year for Jacob’s breakout from solo YouTube star to virtuoso frontman of his own rock band.
Appropriately named DERAPS, the high-energy power trio of Jacob, drummer Josh Gallagher, and bassist William Lachace are ready to unchain their debut self-titled release on June 17th through Metalville Records. I had the chance to speak with guitarist Jacob Deraps ahead of the album’s release.
Highlights include:
-Discussion of the new album
-How DERAPS formed
-How the songwriting was split
-DIY approach to assembling the album
-Why they covered SWEET and not VAN HALEN
-Any pressures being compared to Eddie Van Halen
-Recalling his 1st VAN HALEN live show
-Deraps touring plan
-Sharing a manager with fellow Canadian LEE AARON
-Using YouTube to kickstart his music career
-What is the Dweezil & FRANK ZAPPA Fellowship Award
-Jamming with Dweezil & Steve Lukather (TOTO)
-Better frontman David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar
-And much, much more!
