Formed in 1983, THE MELVINS were an integral band for the development of both grunge and sludge metal. Since 1984, Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover have been the backbone of THE MELVINS. Named after a supervisor at a store in Montesano, Washington where Osborne worked, Melvin was disliked by other employees, and thus, the band’s name was formed.
The present band lineup includes Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover and Steven Shane McDonald (REDD KROSS). Crover played drums with NIRVANA’s early ten-song demo, which would later form part of their debut LP, Bleach. Osborne would later introduce Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic to Dave Grohl, and original bassist for THE MELVINS, Matt Lukin went on to form MUDHONEY. While THE MELVINS didn’t see the massive commercial success of their peers, they are revered the as the Godfather’s of grunge. While this may seem a bit frustrating to most, Osborne seems somewhat grateful for this as it has left him grounded with an appreciation for life, hard work and perseverance of his art.
Buzz Osborne sat down with KNAC.COM during their tour with REDD KROSS (Steven Shane McDonald and Dale Crover both pull double duty) in a very candid interview about his career, band members, tour, and life.
