I've waited quite awhile to see Iced Earth. I for one never really thought they'd make it to my home state, but they did and it proved to be an interesting, fulfilling experience to say the least.
My buddy Trent and I headed out late from Tulsa, as he was just getting off work. We did our best ass-hauling down the turnpike and made it to the venue a tad late. The band was galloping through a flawless rendition of "Burning Times" as we made our way through the crowd. Seeing the setlists on the net, I assume we only missed "Star Spangled Banner" and "Declaration Day"... I could live with that... especially seeing as how I was in for one of the most up close, seamless metal performances ever.
The venue (Bricktown Live) was way, way smaller than I imagined. So was the turnout. With only about 150 people there it was easy to get up front and get Jon Schaffer's Les Paul in your face or a handshake from Ripper. I had always put Iced Earth on a high pedestal and envisioned a huge stadium show, but I got the exact opposite. I was treated with an up close, ear-splitting performance.
They tore through such Glorious Burden gems as "Greenface," "When the Eagle Cries" and "Red Baron/Blue Max" with razor sharp precision. Tim "Ripper" Owens easily showed why he's head and shoulders above most vocalists in this genre with perfect control and soaring screams. He handled such classics as "My Own Savior" and "Iced Earth" as if they were his own.
Even though it was an intimate show, there was still room for some trilogies. Iced Earth gave the crowd the “Something Wicked” trilogy and the complete “Gettysburg” epic back to back. John Schaffer and Ralph Santolla brandished rebel flag and US flag Les Pauls respectively, as well as wearing blue and grey civil war jackets... giving the “Gettysburg” part of the show a little bit of theatrics. For me, this was the best part of the show -- I totally dug seeing the IE guys getting into the different parts and giving it their all.... The audience knew every damn word to “Gettysburg” and you could tell Ripper, Jon and the boys were happy to see that.
