Lemmy's Rockabilly Project Live in Hollywood By Tokemaster General, Contributor Tuesday, January 20, 2004 @ 7:34 PM
Last week, I attended a truly once-in-a-lifetime concert when Lemmy's rockabilly project played at the Cat Club in Hollywood on January 13th. Just a few doors down from Lemmy's famous stomping grounds at the Rainbow, the Cat Club is a small bar owned by Slim Jim Phantom from the Stray Cats who played drums for the band. It was packed, and you could feel it when you walked in -- everyone there knew they were in for something special.
The guys took the stage around 10, and played for about an hour and a half. The band was as follows... on drums, Slim Jim, on lead guitar, Danny B. Harvey from Rockats and various other rockabilly bands, and on stand-up bass, Jonny Bowler from Guana Batz – this guy was extremely talented.
Lemmy picked up a 6-string guitar instead of his normal bass for this show, and he played that thing so hard they kept having to stop the show so he could fix his broken strings. It was really a treat to be 2 feet away from him, watching him perform in such a small bar.
The exact set list is a little fuzzy as I had more than a few beers... but they played tunes from Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Jimmy Reed, Elvis, and other legends of early rock 'n' roll. They didn't play any Motorhead tunes, though one guy kept asking for “Ace of Spades” after every song, until Lemmy told him, "That's enough -- I already said we weren't doing that tonight."
The show was taped for a DVD, which should be great when it comes out. In the meantime, if you're interested in hearing what they sounded like, their CD Lemmy, Slim Jim & Danny B. is available on Cleopatra Records. It was an amazing performance that I'll never forget.
