KISS Army (the KISS tribute band) took to the stage at 10:30 pm on
Sunday evening (10/12/03) at Monte Carlo Pub & Brewery inside of the
Monte Carlo casino & resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.
For the most part each member wore Love Gun-era costuming. "Gene" and "Ace" especially were accurate in their stage outfits. "Peter" wore clothing which resembled the KISS Meets The Phantom Of The Park television movie & "Paul" wore the 1978 solo album costume (with silver & black pants.)
I thought the band looked the part very well and sounded pretty good
also. In fact, the drum sound was outstanding. Staging was above average,
including a flashing light-up KISS logo sign hanging above the drum kit.
There was a huge wall of amps, revolving red police beacons at the
corners of the drum riser and a KISS drum head on the bass drum, the drum kit featured a big gong just like Peter used during 1977.
The stage was covered in dry ice as the band roared through many classic KISS cuts:
Detroit Rock City / Deuce / Let Me Go Rock And Roll / Firehouse / Do You
Love Me / (Torpedo Girl riff) / Cold Gin / Shout It Out Loud / Got To
Choose / C'Mon & Love Me / Strutter / Calling Dr. Love / Shock Me (with
guitar solo) / I Stole Your Love / Take Me / (bloody bass solo) God Of
Thunder / (drum solo) / Black Diamond / Rock And Roll All Nite / Beth
(electric version) / Rock Bottom / Lick It Up
The famous "You Wanted The Best, You Got The Best" introduction kicked
off the two hour set inside the bar which held 555 people when
completely full, and this night the pub was not exactly jam packed.
Audience members seemed to enjoy the gig, and really cheered more during portions of the show when KISS Army imitated the choreography that fans have come to expect at such concerts.
"Gene" did not breathe fire at the end of "Firehouse" nor did "Paul" wear a firehat. "Ace" did not have a smoking guitar and no rockets or pyro effects were used. "Peter" did not have the levitating drum kit, but this is not the real KISS so it's unfair to imagine every detail would be reproduced.
Overall the band was a lot of fun to watch and it's obvious that they've practiced for a long time as they were very good, and played faithful renditions of most songs! If you notice they are coming to your area then please go see them.
