Watch Your Speed: An Exclusive Interview With SOILWORK Vocalist BJORN “SPEED” STRID By Charlie Steffens aka Gnarly Charlie, Writer/Photographer Monday, October 24, 2016 @ 11:32 AM
While still touring, promoting their tenth studio album, The Ride Majestic, Swedish metal band SOILWORK released their Death Resonance album on August 19, 2016 via Nuclear Blast Records. Death Resonance, is a collection of rarities and unreleased tracks going back to Stabbing The Drama release from 2005. Two brand new songs are featured on the record, and five tracks have been remixed.
Singer Bjorn “Speed” Strid says 2016 has been an exceptional year for SOILWORK:
“We’ve been doing everything this year. Looking back, I don’t think I’ve been able to grasp what we’ve been doing this year. I can’t melt all the impressions,” Strid says with astonishment. “I don’t know where to put them yet. We opened up in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea. Then we did all the summer festivals. Then we did the UK, and then we did South America for the first time, and it was such a crazy tour. Sort of overwhelming, but mostly in a positive way. That was on a totally different level. It was just insane. It was to the point where it almost got scary sometimes. But it was kind of like a good scary (laughs). Absolutely crazy. Almost fanatic. That was definitely something new for us. I’m sure it’s pretty much the same for every band that goes to South America within the metal genre. We’re still out there promoting The Ride Majestic. Now having this compilation coming out as well, sort of gives you a little bit of a boost.”
Four of the band’s family members had died all within a month during the recording of The Ride Majestic, which was released in August 2015. “(The title) was sort of the tribute to them.” Strid explains. “When you lose somebody close to you—of course that’s going to put a spin on existential thoughts, and all the grieving that comes with it.” Citing the origin of Death Resonance, Strid referred to the record as the aftermath. “Even though it’s not really a new album, it’s like a new release with old stuff and lost tracks. It’s sort of like a call from the other side. It might seem a little bit morbid when you look at the cover, because it’s sort of gory compared to what we usually feature on our album covers. We see it as the aftermath of what we went through. We’re all really proud of The Ride Majestic. It was a special album for us. And then digging up some really cool old tracks, plus two brand new tracks, that really didn’t make it on The Ride Majestic album. But they were two very special tracks compiled with everything else. I think it turned out to be a pretty interesting album at the end.”
SOILWORK is currently out on tour in North America, headlining the 2016 "Fury Tour" with UNEARTH, WOVENWAR, BATTLECROSS and DARKNESS DIVIDED.
