For Immediate Release:
RACHEL BOLAN Of SKID ROW Takes Up Car Racing
Bass Guitarist Joins 600 Racing's Legends Series SemiPro Division
The excitement of life in a world-famous rock band is considerable, but Skid Row bass guitarist Rachel Bolan is pursuing another activity loaded with just as many thrills -- car racing.
Bolan is a longtime fan of motor sports, and he recently started competing in races in the Legends Series, which is sanctioned by a Charlotte, NC-based organization called 600 Racing. Several speedways throughout the South hold Legends Series races on weekends.
"I'd been in a couple of celebrity races the past few years and I loved it. I've been a racing fan since I was a kid," Bolan says. "The Legends Series is very competitive. It's real racing. The cars can reach speeds of 100+ mph. I officially started racing in March."
The Legends Series cars are uniquely designed 5/8-scale replicas of classic NASCAR vehicles. The intention was to create a fun and affordable racing league. The semipro division, which Bolan participates in, is the novice class and it includes drivers who are new to the sport as well as experienced drivers who race when their schedule permits.
600 Racing built Bolan a 1937 Chevrolet sedan replica for him to race. It's powered by a Yamaha motorcycle engine. He has three corporate sponsors for his car: Rightrock Custom Sportswear, NashVegas Coach and Foundrymusic.com.
Legends Series cars are designed to require very little maintenance, and this is one factor that keeps costs down. Bolan's car only needs a two-man crew. Most Legends Series cars cost between just $10,000 and $15,000.
"You can even haul one of these cars in the bed of a pickup truck," Bolan says.
Fortunately for Bolan, his Skid Row summer touring commitments don't prevent him from enjoying racing. Legends Series racing occurs year-round at tracks in cities like Concord, NC; Hickory, NC; and Atlanta, GA, which is where he now lives.
"You just forget about everything else when you're in that car focusing on the race," Bolan says. "It's an amazing feeling."
