It hasn’t been a great month for ‘80s bands on the comeback trail. In the midst of the R.I. nightclub tragedy, it was great to see the Scorpions/Whitesnake/Dokken tour doing so well. Here is my review of Dokken at the Nassau Coliseum, March 5th.
I arrived from Boston at the arena a half hour before showtime. The venue was starting to fill with rock fans. By the time the band took the stage at 7 PM sharp -- the arena was already packed. Dokken hit the stage with a thunderous applaud. Purple lights flashings and a excellent guitar intro from Alex De Rosso, the band was ready to rock.
Don Dokken came out on stage wearing a black fur coat and sunglasses.
His voice was strong and clear. He stage presence was captivating. It was great to see the band in an arena setting.
From the moment they opened the show with “Kiss of Death” until closing with “In My Dreams,” the guys put on a great rock show. They performed all of their favorite hits, including “Breaking the Chains,” and
“It’s Not Love” and “Alone Again.” The highlight of the evening was the singalong to “It’s Not Love” and “Alone Again.” Everyone knew the words and had a great time.
I got to talk to Don after the show, and he said this tour is about the music and the fans. The band is playing festivals in Europe this summer and hopefully will get on a summer package tour. It was fun seeing Barry Sparks talking with his former bandmate Joe Lynn Turner backstage. They performed with Yngwie Malmsteen a few years back.
For the near sellout crowd, it was a chance to turn back the hands of time and enjoy the music. Dokken closed the night with “In My
Dreams,” which Don said is a song about hope and peace.
