This year’s annual summer Ozzfest festival line-up was announced from the infamous Beverly Hills manse of the ever-entertaining Osbourne family, dogs and all! The Osbournes graciously invited a small, select group of journalists to invade their dining room for an English lunch, and their billiards room to officially reveal the details of this year’s festivities.
In a very warm and casual setting, a very healthy-looking and jovial Sharon Osbourne came in and announced the Main Stage acts, and then son Jack, who’s been known to have a large say in the picking of artists, joined her to announce the Second Stage acts. As Jack read off that Cradle of Filth would headline the Second Stage, Sharon gave out a big cheer and jumped up and down like she has been bursting to break this news. Then they invited the headlining guests to take the stage.
Mr. Osbourne sat up on a small platform flanked by Korn vocalist Jonathan Davis and vocalist Marilyn Manson, as well as Chevelle vocalist Pete Loeffler, who’s band had “graduated” this year from Second Stage act (2002) to the Main Stage opening act. As you may know, it’s been a tradition to alternate the main headlining act between Ozzy and Black Sabbath. This year would have been scheduled to be Sabbath, so naturally that was the first question out of the gates. Uh, unfortunately and honestly, I didn’t understand one word that Ozzy replied with. I think he implied that Tony Iommi wasn’t into it this year. Who knows!
Ozzy’s band this year will be the same as last year: Zakk Wylde on guitar, Mike Bordin on drums and Robert Trujillo on bass. Trujillo was heavily rumored to fill the vacant slot in Metallica this summer, but that is obviously not the case now. It was asked if Ozzy’s daughter, as-of-late vocalist, Kelly would appear on the tour, to which Ozzy asked Sharon if she was or not! Sharon replied that Kelly would be on tour with British pop star Robbie Williams this summer. Ozzy’s health was addressed as to which he replied he was sober, and working out 5 days a week and feeling great.
When Manson was addressed as to why he and his band were doing this a third time, Ozzy quickly shouted out, “The money!” and Sharon squashed that reasoning with, “Actually it’s my tits!” Gotta love that family! After a few laughs about seducing Sharon into letting them on the tour, Manson conceded, “It’s the best tour because it’s… relentless. [At Ozzfest] you know what you’re going to get. Ozzy guarantees fucking Ozzy. And I guarantee fucking Marilyn Manson.” Manson’s band members stood off to the side, but didn’t speak.
Then the jokes flew around about why Sharon would let Korn on this tour, as she had some harsh words to say about Jonathan Davis in a Rolling Stone article last year, however any conflictions were clearly in the past now. Sharon stated, “I have known Jonathan for a great number of years… he’s knows I’m a big mouth!” “We’ve made up!” Davis piped in.
The Osbourne’s wanted Disturbed to attend today, however they are currently in Australia.
All in all, the camaraderie of the event was one of “family” and excitement towards the forthcoming tour. In it’s 8th year strong, the artist roster of Ozzfest expands more and more every year. Although it’s a costly event to organize and run, The Osbournes are making an effort to keep the tickets prices lower by offering a limited number each day of $10 lawn seats at most venue ticket boxes. Regularly priced tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster.
