Well after 15 years of wishing and praying, and having to fly to Seattle three times to see them, Queensryche finally came to Alaska. They played New Year’s Eve in Anchorage at the Egan Center.
They took the stage at 11pm and rocked their way into 2003 with a 2 1/2 hour set. This being my first time seeing them without Chris DeGarmo, and reading that Kelly Gray was no longer with them, I was eager to see who they had to fill the spot. I was really hoping to see DeGarmo emerge from the lights, but much to my dismay it wasn’t him. Geoff introduced the new guy as Mike Stone.
They opened the show with “Revolution Calling” and then went right into “Operation Mindcrime,” the set list consisted of everything on the Mindcrime album except "The Needle Lies" and "Suite Sister Mary." Others included “Queen of the Ryche,” “Walk in the Shadows,” “MN156,” "The Lady Wore Black," “Jet City Woman" and “Empire,” and several others from the EP, Promised Land, and onto a few from Hear in the Now and Q2K.
Geoff sang his ass off as he always does, and Scott, Eddie and Michael also played very well. I must admit I wasn’t real impressed with Mike Stone -- the lack of Chris DeGarmo in the band is definitely noticeable with the overall chemistry of the band, and the signature vocal harmonies between Geoff and Chris were greatly missed.
After taking a break to ring in the New Year, they closed the show with “Take Hold of the Flame” and “Silent Lucidity.”
All in all, it was a great show, and its nice to see the guys still doing what they do best. Go check ‘em out if you get the chance -- they still got it.
