Doors opened around 8 and the line began to slowly move. Once me and my
friends got in it was about 30 mins until the first band took the stage, I'm
not gonna even try to remember what they were called -- they were very
repetitive and were kinda a mix between nu-metal and alternative.
The second band were called "Comes With The Fall," they were alot different than the
first and had a little more variety. The singer and the guitarist kinda
looked like different versions of Lenny Kravitz. Anyway this band was
Jerry Cantrell's backup band. I didnt particularly like their style, but the
drummer was good.
Next up were
"Mad At Gravity." Don't even get me started on these guys. They sounded
exactly like Hoobastank and the dude sounded exactly like Eminem when he
spoke. At this point in the night I was extremely pissed at Cantrell for
choosing these shitty bands to open. By the time Mad At gravity got off it
was about 11:40... I'd been there for over 3 hours waiting for
Cantrell, and i was PISSED.
At around 12, I moved from the entrance (where i was to avoid Mad At
Gravity's music) and moved to the floor, up on the balcony behind me was
none other than Vinnie Paul of Pantera. I yelled at him and threw him a
devil horns with my hand and he nodded back, at that point in the night that
was the definite highlight of my evening. Cantrell entered the stage in
leather pants and sleevless leather type shirt, the crowd went fucking crazy
because this was the man we had all been waiting for.
Cantrell tore through his set with vocal harmony and amazing clarity and
precision with his guitar, he nailed every note perfectly for every solo, he
threw out some Alice in Chains covers, including Would, What the Hell Have
I, Brother, Them Bones, Down in a Hole. I was not too familiar with
Degredation Trip so i have to apologize for not knowing the Set List. These
Are the songs I do rememeber, not neccassarily in this order (once again I
apologize.) He did play Angel Eyes, Degredation Trip, Anger Rising, I Cut you
In, My Song, Brother, Would. He finished his set and said thankyou to the
fans and walked off,
the lights stayed off.
We were all chanting “JERRY JERRY” and waiting for
the encore of the night. Cantrell once again took the stage and began with
“What The Hell Have I,” at this point I would have to say the singer of
Comes With The Fall doing Layne Staley's parts was
not the greatest, I mean he did it, but not close to Layne -- It didn't matter
really because the crowd pretty much drowned out alot of the parts,
regardless they were the best AIC covers you will EVER hear again. After
““What The Hell Have I,” they went into “Down in a
Hole” the entire crowd singing along with every word throughout the song.
The highlight of the evening was still to come (at least for me and any
Pantera fan,) there was one song left for the encore, Cantrell said “ The
last song its called Them Bones... come on Dimebag,” and from left stage
appears none other than Dimebag Darrel!!! Cantrell and Dime tear into the
set, Dimebag takes off his hat and throws it to the crowd, the place went
fucking apeshit, as soon as I saw him hit the stage something clicked, I
pushed my way as far forward to the front as far as possible, I went
completely apeshit, I could not believe that Dimebag was playing 5 feet
in front of me! To be honest I dont think his amp was very loud but he was
tearing it up ripping through a solo about a minute in the song. This
experience with Cantrell had just made up for the 3 hours of disgust and
boredom. Cantrell's set was amazing, he was amazing.
