Due to a chronic elbow injury he has suffered for the past several years, Slayer drummer Paul Bostaph is leaving the band. Original Slayer drummer, Dave Lombardo, is confirmed to “guest star” with the band for the next leg of their God Hates Us All U.S. tour, beginning January 24th in New Haven, Connecticut but has not been confirmed as a permanent member.
Bostaph says he feels he is unable to continue performing to his fullest potential and greatest intensity. “It’s been an unbelievable ride with Slayer,” Bostaph says. “Playing with these guys has been an incredible high point in my career, and I am really grateful for the experience.”
Slayer bandmates Kerry King, Jeff Hanneman and Tom Araya are all thankful to have had Bostaph in the band and have nothing but praise for him. Guitarist Kerry King says, “Paul has been an incredible part of our band and we will definitely miss his talent. We wish him all the best.”
Lombardo is Slayer’s original drummer, and to many the fan favorite, and played on such pinnacle albums as Reign In Blood, Show No Mercy, and South of Heaven before leaving the band to form Grip Inc. Lately Lombardo has been playing with former Faith No more vocalist Mike Patton in his band Fantomos. “It’s great to be back with Slayer for the tour – I’m psyched to get out there and kick-ass with them again,” says Lombardo. “A lot of fans have been looking forward to Dave coming back; it feels great to have him playing with us for a while,” adds frontman Tom Araya.
Slayer will be searching for a permanent replacement as soon as the tour is completed.
