A Lower Deep -- Unsigned Hard Core By Sefany Jones, Contributing Editor Monday, August 19, 2002 @ 1:50 PM
Troy Reid Guitars Brad Aaron Drums Tim Umstead Bass A Lower Deep is an up and coming hard core band from Birmingham, Alabama. I had the wonderful opportunity of meeting the guys, and having a chance to talk to them about their career, and their music. While talking to the guys, I had the opportunity to sit in on one of their sessions in the recording studio. I was very pleased with the sound, and the guys put a lot of heart and soul into their music. Between sets in the studio, I had the chance to sit and talk to them and ask them about how they came to be a band, and how they had all met. Billy Mullican (Lead Vocals) told me that he met Troy Reid by chance on the Internet. Both had given metal in the South a serious go, only to meet with one brick wall after another. Both had all but given up hope of finding other quality musicians who shared their vision of what a metal band should be. Singer, Billy Mullican, and guitarist, Troy Reid, knew after one conversation that with the two of them they had the core of what they had been searching for. Billy, then contacted his previous drummer from a former band called “War Within,” and then ask Brad Aaron to fill in on drums for a demo. Brad soon became addicted to the music he was playing, and Billy and Troy were impressed with his talents, and soon asked him to join the band. Tim Umstead was known to the guys as a bad ass bassist, but couldn't be found initially, and hope was given up on finding him. But fate stepped in just before time to record the bass lines to the demo. Tim called up, and after one listen to the material, was on board for the long haul. I asked the guys what their music was inspired by, and they responded that they have their own unique sound, although they were motivated early in life by several different bands, and types of music. I also asked them since they are an upcoming band, if they had thought about submitting their music to radio stations to be played, in order to gain a audience, and fans. Their reaction is yes, they would love to do that, and have considered submitting their music to KNAC.com, for the Uncharted musicians show on Sunday mornings. We discussed ideas of a possible CD release party in October locally once the CD is ready to be released, and they guys are all for it, and are looking forward to getting their name, as well as their music out all over the country. Look for them on the Internet at Alowerdeep.com. Listen to the first unmastered release “The Breed” off of the new CD, I can say that you won’t be disappointed if you love hard-core metal.
