METALJAM - Shredding For A Cause Is Back! By Larry Petro, News Monkey Wednesday, April 2, 2014 @ 4:24 PM
The event will take place THIS Saturday, April 5th at "The Gaslamp" in Long Beach, Ca. KNAC.COM DJ Junkman will not only MC the evening's festivities as he always does, but will also take his place behind the drum kit during the jam.
Junkman's excitement is hard to contain:
"LED ZEPPELIN's "Immigrant Song" is my song to play this year. We have lots of raffle prizes to give a way, like guitars, autographed artwork, and books CDs etc, from a lot of people in the 'Metal Community'.
The event is called 'Metaljam" (www.metaljam.org) and it is a fundraiser for Autism Awareness. 100 % of the money raised from admission, and raffle tickets sold, goes to Autism speaks. And the place we have it at , the Gaslamp in Long Beach (www.gaslamprestaurant.com) donates money as well. The event was started by my friend Jeff Fahnestock, who is a local OC musician, and singer for the BLACK SABBATH tribute ELECTRIC FUNERAL. Jeff has a severely non-functioning, autistic son named Jake, who reacts positively, for no certain reason, to certain heavy metal songs. About 10 years ago, Jeff decided to raise money for autism awareness through an event featuring a lot of people in the 'Metal Tribute ' band community in Orange County, as well as Metal Fans around Southern California in general.
A few weeks before the event, he picks a list of classic metal songs, featuring bands like SLAYER, METALLICA, DEF LEPPARD, QUIET RIOT, BLACK SABBATH, etc, and posts a "sign-up sheet" on the website. People sign up and they jam out these tunes onstage during the event.(I actually get behind the drums as well, in addition to my duties as MC) and everyone takes their parts very seriously, but have a lot of fun doing it. In between songs, we raffle off prizes donated from a host of companies and that is where we raise most of the money.
I have, once again, been asked to MC, as I have since it was started, and it is something I truly love. I have a godson, and he has lived with Autism all his life, and anything I can do to help out, I will. The people involved in this event are great people, and the event has grown considerably since its start. All the volunteers, from stage, managers, to ticket sellers, to security, to the players themselves, are all dedicated, and every year gets better and better."
Check out the artwork on the flyer for this event! It was created by none other than Derek Riggs, who designed the now infamous Eddie, mascot of metal icons IRON MAIDEN, and was also a special guest at last year's event.
Make your plans now to attend, as you will NOT want to miss this event!
