It was a warm Wednesday May 29th that Papa Roach headlined a show at Saint Andrew’s Hall in downtown Detroit. I hadn’t seen Papa Roach yet, but actually enjoyed their debut record quite a bit. Unlike some of these so called nu metal bands I think Papa Roach is rather interesting lyrically and had some good guitar work. Anyway, I thought it would be cool to see a band in a small venue like Saint Andrew’s and tickets were only 14 bucks so I thought why not? My friend Dwayne went with me. He sings in a (mostly cover) band so I was hoping that he would enjoy the show too.
We arrived just before 7 p.m. to a small line outside the venue filled with a very young crowd. I wasn’t sure how they would be, but they didn’t disappoint. The first band, Sindy Syringe, hit the stage about 7:30 and played a short set. I din’t know who it was at first but it was a band under the tuttelage of Bizzare of D12. No one else knew either so the show was kind of lackluster. It featured a black woman who was actually a pretty good singer, but the band wasn’t really my taste, having a rock, funk, hip hop mixture. No one really was into it until Bizarre came out and got the crowd a little riled with a couple of chants.
Next was Deadsy whom Dwayne had seen at Family Values last year. They played a half hour set and did a Rush cover, “Tom Sawyer.” I thought they were alright but nothing special. Dwayne swore that there were vocal effects on every single song and didn’t care for that.
And then, oh yeah, it was Injected who totally blew me away. I must say they were great and the recordings don’t match their live show. The guitarist Jade was headbanging throughout and the singer, Danny actually sang instead of just rapped. They played songs mostly from their debut album, Burn It Black, including the title track, “Bullet,” “Faithless,” and others. Then the singer asked if there was anybody over 25 there. A few of us including me and Dwayne raised our fists. Then Danny said the next song was for “all you old fuckers out there ‘cause we’re old fuckers too!” They then played the Crue’s “Live Wire.” Injected was the first band of the night which had a pit form during the set. I had seen the commercial for Injected’s record and had pegged them as more alternative or new school punk but they were more mettalic than I expected and put on a great high energy show.
I didn’t think Papa Roach could match the energy Injected had infused into the crowd, but I was wrong. After a short set up, Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll” blared through the speakers. The song ended and Papa Roach entered the stage blasting through hits, other Infest cuts, new songs, and the older “ Walking Through Barbed Wire.” Coby got us to chant the “Dead Cell” refrain and brought out Taproot’s lead singer for a duet on “Broken Home.” Coby was on fire thoughout the set and gave it his all. His shirt was completely soaked by set end. He got up on the balcony with the crowd during a couple of songs. During “Blood Brothers” he jumped on top of the bar of which I was nearby. I thought the crowd was going to crush me trying to reach him. He did that “Braveheart” style mosh pit which they had picked up from Sick Of It All in Europe. At set’s end we sang “Happy Birthday” to the drummer Tobin. All in all it was a great show.
