Oh yes, a night in Las Vegas on a Friday night and rolling up to the beautiful Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino. As you enter the property you're provided with plenty of opportunities to purchase a hot new bootleg shirt of Usher, or maybe even a Mr. Cheeks(?) wife beater in the parking lot. We continue on without one of those fine garments in our possession through packed elevators, busy slots machines and thousands of anxious fans... Usher fans(?), to a much smaller House Of Blues to see, "An Evening With DOWN!"
Where else but Vegas could they book to completely different shows in the same building on the same night. Those poor people having to sit through a performer who calls himself Mr. Cheeks to hear some "musical genius" sing hot numbers like, “You Make Me Wanna” or “Twork It Out,” and the classic “Good Ol' Ghetto” while we get to hear Sabbath-sounding hits like “New Orleans Is A Dying Whore” or “Beautifully Depressed”and a classic, “Stone The Crow.” I think we all know who got their money’s worth.
The opening act for the evening was in the form of a video of the band recording their latest release with interludes of live performances of their influences including Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Motorhead and Led Zeppelin. With a sea of Pantera shirts and a pumped up crowd, Down takes the stage and rocks the house for the next 90 minutes. Playing classics like “Temptation's Wings,” “Lifer,” and new songs like “Ghosts Along The Mississippi,” and “The Seed” just to name a few. In between songs you were entertained with a humbled Phil and his trademark sayings like, "I wanna see you motherfuckers go apeshit," as well as others.
As the show concludes there was not one unsatisfied fan leaving the show. With 2/5 Pantera, 2/5 of COC, and 1/5 Crowbar there was nothing left but to, " ..let the power of the riff compel you!"
