Prong Rocks Hard For a Small C

It's a Sunday night in Carrboro, NC and we're gathered to see Prong… all 40 or so of us. So the attendance wasn't spectacular that night, that didn't mean that Prong would disappoint us, would it?

The night started with Raleigh locals, Jam Pain Society, opening up on the two-band bill. How do you describe Jam Pain Society? At times Pop, Metal, touch of Dance Industrial… and as they say, Pop Culture Overload. I've caught them three times in three months and they definitely grow on you. Leah Kirby, the vocalist, has a great set of pipes, and when she truly sings, she'll knock ya over. If something a little out of the ordinary is your cup of tea, check out www.JamPainSociety.com and see for yourself what the Raleigh buzz is all about.

After an extremely long break between bands, Prong finally took the stage. Tommy Victor is the only remaining member of Prong from their heyday I am told. But the new guys definitely let everyone know that new Prong and the old stuff is all theirs. From “Broken Peace” to “Snap Your Fingers,” to their new one on display, “Initiation,” the new 4-piece band let you know they were there to shred. And, as my sore neck and wasted vocal chords can tell ya, shred they did, and damnit, did it well.

Despite technical difficulties with the monitors throughout the entire set, Tommy and company tore through a sixteen-song set that left the miniature multitude of us, sweaty, tired, and sore from whiplash.

It has to be tough to get up in front of such a small crowd and deliver such a high-energy show. But the boys did not disappoint us at all.

Tommy is not known for crowd interaction, and considering he spent the entire set between songs trying to get the monitor situation fixed, I realized that they didn't need to talk and bond with us. They were there to punch out one hard-hitting riff after another, idle chitchat be damned.

If Prong is comin' to your town, ya definitely want to check ‘em out. If the new song “Initiation” is any indication of what the new album will be like, then go pick it up. Prong has a definitive sound, as a three piece or four. And their new stuff sounds like it is going to stand right up beside such great albums as Cleansing and Rude Awakening.

My thanks to Jam Pain Society's Dave Rogers and Prong's Manager Paul Spriggs for allowing me to film the nights proceedings.

The night’s setlist was as follows:

Device
Misery
Darksigns
One Outnumbered
Close The Door
Broken Peace
Rude Awakening
Caprice
Initiation
Beg To Differ
Whose Fist
Snap Your Fingers
Test
Controller
Prove You Wrong
Cutrate
