In a smorgasbord featuring the who's-who of rock and roll, Rob Zombie was served up as the main dish Saturday night at the Universal Amphitheatre and proved to be a rather tasty morsel.
With members of Pantera, Marilyn Manson, the Cult and Danzig in attendance, Zombie used an impressive array of horror props and shock rock anthems to prove why his "strange and uncanny" performances are so popular. Accompanied by go-go dancers, 12-foot "Terminator-like" robotic skeletons and an alien creature that would have made Vincent Price grin, the Massachusetts-born singer kept the capacity crowd in a frenzy throughout his first L.A. appearance in seven years.
Like a butcher with a meat grinder, the former White Zombie frontman cranked out such crowd pleasers as “Living Dead Girl,” “Thunderkiss ‘65,” “More Human Than Human,” “Demonoid Phenomenon,” “Dragula” (complete with Herman Munster hot-rod footage) and “Supercharger Heaven” during the 90 minute performance. He supported his newest efforts, Sinister Urge, with the hit single “Feel So Numb,” and also by showing his allegiance to pro-wrestling with “Never Gonna Stop,” which is also WWF mega-superstar Edge's theme song.
Despite the overwhelmingly positive reaction to his new release, it was obvious that Zombie's proudest moment of the evening came when he announced that his long awaited feature film, House of 1000 Corpses had been granted an R rating by the MPAA. "Apparently, it was because of sadistic violence," he sarcastically commented before performing the self-named title track. After viewing a five-minute snippet of the film, which the crowd gave a roaring approval to, it's easy to see why Zombie is so anxiously awaiting its release.
Backstage, there was lots of talk about the new TV series, The Osbournes. Judging by the amount of intrigue and awe that most people seemed to be exhibiting when they talked about it, I would dare say that MTV might have the best new show of the season in their folds. The other hot topic was the recent success of the Los Angeles Kings and how they are regaining the popularity they had during their Gretzky-era. Even Zombie himself, who I saw at a Kings playoff game last season, sported a Kings jersey (Heinze 57) during the show.
Legendary punk band, the Damned, with Dave Varian and off-the-wall guitarist Captain Sensible provided the musical appetizers along with up and coming rockers Sinnistar.
