First US Tour in 17th years!

The first and last time I saw Paul Di'anno was at the Whisky with his band "Killers" in 1992 as well as a few years prior at the Concrete Foundations Forum. Tonight was a nice treat after a few delays and legal issues in the past thats kept him from performing in the US. Local band Ninth Circle opened up followed by Icarus Witch from Pittsburgh who incidently are also Pauls backing band on this tour. They're pretty solid in their own right and played a full set of melodic metal before the big "part 2" later on.

Once Paul took the stage from the opening song "Wrathchild" (which started out a little rusty) to the encore of "Iron Maiden" the set was fairly solid and smoothed out for the rest of the night. High marks for the dual leads, the bottom end,etc although at times the tempos were turned up a notch up from the actual original versions. A hardcore Maiden purist would frown on that but all things considered it worked.

Brixton is located in Redondo Beach right on the pier and has had quite a few great rock shows in the past and tonight was no different. A fairly decent turnout on a wed considering the location.

Di'anno may not look like he did during his Maiden tenure, but the voice was there (most of the time) as some of those high notes were a bit trying (which he admits) especially when he delievered some "death metal" style growls every once in a while during parts of those classic Maiden songs...which to me was all wrong coming out of HIM. That needs to stop (my 2 cents)

Battlezone was pretty damn good. Killers "Murder One" also worth the ca$h.

metalpimplehead - 3/25/2010 9:35:37 PM
Actually, Battlezone was a good band. I had their music and was really into it.

chinaboy - 3/21/2010 11:30:20 AM
You know he's gonna end up drugged up, violent and getting shot for assaulting the police.

chinaboy - 3/17/2010 9:48:33 AM
Yea, well...now in the day the fat drugged fuck is fronting obesity and no retirement plan.

Ammo_Dog - 3/17/2010 8:44:03 AM
Saw him back in the day when he was fronting "Battlezone"....good shit!

"A hardcore Maiden purist" is code for "old fat homo".

@metaldominator - Paul Di'anno's Battlezone. I remember seeing it in store mid 1980s. No, I didn't buy it either. Not to be a hater but I could never see Maiden where they ended up at with Paul as singer. Bruce opened up a Brave New World for that band-- as both performer and songwriting foil.

Heard him on Eddie Trunk, and he has an attitude problem. His problems come from his drinking (resulting in getting fired from IM), beating his girlfriend (why he was in County lockup for six months), and his criminal behavior is why he was barred from working in the U.S. for years. He is not honest about his Muslim faith, and would welcome another 9/11.

Agree with the reviewer 100% - that death metal growling has to go. This guy used to be able to sing, and he was good, listen to something like Prodigal Son. Only thing I can figure he does the growling because he can't sing like he used to anymore.

"Di'Anno has been hit and miss on his own"...what the fuck has this ever ever done on his own ? has he ever done anything than rehash his Maiden stint ?

DJWill...his finger up your ass?

frankiefresh20 - 3/2/2010 2:44:23 PM
Great show by Paul. It was really cool to hear all those old great Maiden songs that Maiden no longer touches. The opening band Ninth Circle were really good for a local band. Bought both their cd's that night, check them out www.myspace.com/ninthcircleworld. They won over a new fan that night.

Fucker look old and fat and sloppy. Bottom line- punk singer in a metal band...you're fired. Loser could-have-been.

heathenelz - 2/25/2010 12:28:27 AM
Do you ever wonder what Maiden might have been like had Di'Anno remained a member? I love the first couple of Maiden albums, but I'm not sure they'd be the legends they are today if they hadn't brought Bruce on board.Di'Anno has been hit and miss on his own, butI love that he's still doing this after all these years.
