Mustaine's Monster of Metal To

As we continue down the path of Gigantour ’06, I have started to prepare myself for some flak.

Quite frankly, I just don’t get Opeth. While many people will be glad they got the chance to see them on this tour, I have to admit I think they just didn’t fit in on the bill. They seemed so out of place. Some have said the same thing about Dream Theater on last year’s bill, but they fit within the scheme of things more than Opeth did.

Even a majority of the crowd didn’t even seem to know how to respond. While the Dodge was now nearing capacity, most of the attendees seemed more interested in how long the beer line was (beer line note: if I get charged $20 for two beers again I am climbing a bell tower with my assault rifle………sarcasm mode now turned off). I actually felt bad for the band, they seemed tight but they couldn’t capture the attention of the audience. This was emphasized by a conversation I overheard: One guy asked his buddy how many songs had been played – 5 or 6? At this point his buddy said “Dude, it’s the second song”.

Next up was another crowd favorite – Lamb of God. Chants for Lamb of God may have even started before Opeth got off the stage. Regardless, LOG was there with a fury. Having just passed through town on the Slayer tour, it was apparent that Arizona didn’t get enough of them the first time around.

For Gigantour, the stage presence was massive. Having played late afternoon/early evening on the Slayer bill at an outside venue, tonight one could easily see much better LOG is suited playing later. The lights complimented the band’s energy. The smoke machine was on a little longer than necessary, but still added an element to the performance.

The songs took on a new ferociousness this time around. The setlist included Ruin, Hourglass, Laid to Rest, 11th Hour, Blacken The Cursed Sun, Redneck, Pathetic, Again We Rise, Walk With Me in Hell, Now You've Got Something To Die For, Vigil and As The Palaces Burn. LOG took advantage of the longer set time and really poured on the aggression. Needless to say, the floor was a swirling, sweaty mess.

A special congrats goes out to the guys for landing at #8 on Billboard with the release of Sacrament.

Last but not least, the mighty Megadeth hits the stage in the barrage of flames as Blackmail the Universe blared out of the amps. The roar of the crowd was as deafening as the explosions on stage. Without wasting a second, the band then kicked in to Set the World Afire and The Scorpion. The packed Dodge Theater was shaking the rafters with approval. The former hometown metal king makes good yet again.

Mustaine made a heartfelt statement about Phoenix and Arizona, saying his missed his home even though he is living in San Diego now. You could feel his sincerity.

The crowd ate up each and every song tonight – which included Wake Up Dead, In My Darkest Hour, Die Dead Enough, Skin O’ My Teeth, She Wolf, Symphony of Destruction, crowd favorite Take No Prisoners. For a brief moment, the momentum of the night took a slight dip when the band launched in to Trust, but quickly regained its force with Hangar 18, Tornado of Souls, Kick the Chair and Peace Sells.

The two encore songs included Holy Wars and something new - Washington is Next! from the upcoming United Abominations. How was the new song? Well you’ll just have to check out Gigantour when it hits your town or wait for the new CD.

At this point, I am hoping you will allow me a little self indulgence. For those of you who picked up a tour program – or who will – check out page two, the full page shot of Dave Mustaine. The photo was taken by yours truly at last year’s Gigantour show. Check the inside back cover under Credits/Photographers and you will see me listed as well.
